'Apple's new servers could rock the data center'

"For Steve Jobs, it was a rare flub: In his Macworld Expo keynote address Tuesday in San Francisco, Apple's CEO stumbled when describing a new feature, confessing to the audience of Macfans, 'I don't even know what that is.' He wasn't talking about new, smaller iPods, or spiffier video-editing software, or new features in the iTunes Music Store. Jobs, as usual, had his gadget patter perfect. Instead, his gaffe came while discussing the Xserve, Apple's little-known but supremely powerful server," Owen Thomas writes for Business 2.0.

"A supercomputer built out of G5 servers costs a fortieth the price of Apple's top two competitors. Apple's storage systems, furthermore, sell for 60 percent less per gigabyte than the cheapest competition (which, by the way, is Dell's)," Thomas writes. "Apple's new servers could rock the data center. But first the innovative company needs to learn how to talk hard-core tech."

MacDailyNews Take: Condescending? Yes. Apple knows how to talk hard-core tech, don't let Jobs' misconstrued joke fool you. The Xserve G5 and Xserve RAID are ready to make a formidable splash in IT-land.
