Apple releases iPod Updater 2004-08-06; supports all models of iPod, iPod mini 




Apple Computer has released iPod Updater 2004-08-06 which includes iPod software 3.0.1 for iPods with a Click Wheel. iPod Updater 2004-08-06 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2004-07-15 for all other iPod models. Download and install the iPod Updater 2004-08-06 (10.6MB) then connect your iPod or iPod mini to your computer. The iPod Updater will automatically determine if an update is required.

iPod Software 3.0.1 provides:
- Improved connectivity with some FireWire cards using the VIA chipset
- Improved connectivity with FireWire hubs, and with 4-pin FireWire ports
- Improved power management
- Improved performance with the optional external battery pack
- Removing headphones while the hold switch is on no longer wakes iPod

New Updates for Click Wheel iPods:
- Improved connectivity with some FireWire cards using the VIA chipset
- Improved connectivity with FireWire hubs, and with 4-pin FireWire ports
- Improved power management
- Improved performance with the optional external battery pack

Updates for iPod with a Dock connector and iPod mini:

- Support for the Apple Lossless Encoder, to enable compressed music encoding at high quality

Updates for iPod without a Dock connector:
- Compatibility with iTunes 4.5 or later and the iTunes Music Store
- Improved playback performance

MacDailyNews Take: Also kills RealNetworks' "Harmony" dead. Just kidding... maybe: we await reports... Seriously, though, we wonder why the update is labeled 2004-08-06 and it just showed up on Software Update today; Apple has done this before, but it's pretty rare.
