Play Any Audio Through Airport Express

Airport Express Can Be Flexible

Before we get your hopes up about playing your Quake III sound through your stereo with an Airport Express, there's one catch; there's about a one-second delay between the time the sound is made and the time it is played by your stereo. There's also a slight loss in quality, though not much. You're also going to need a relatively new Mac to do this with. You can also do this with a PC using very similar methods, but we aren't covering that here. You'll also need iTunes, since it's currently the only software that works with the Airport Express.

Step one; grab a copy of Nicecast from Rogue Amoeba software. Note: it isn't free, so if you like this solution, do pay for Nicecast.

If you don't already have Unsanity's Application Enhancer software, Nicecast should install it for you, because Audio Hijack server, software that Nicecast needs to grab audio from any source, depends on APE to run.

Using Nicecast is easy. Simply select the source from which you are going to grab your audio from, and hit Start. Then open Safari and go to http://localhost:8000/playlist.pls. iTunes should open and begin playing your audio!

Unfortunately, there isn't yet any way around the delay, since Nicecast has to encode your audio into an MP3 stream. Hopefully, Apple will release an Airport Express SDK soon.
