AP Music Theory is by definition a college level course. Theory I and Theory II are prerequisites for this class. On rare occasion a student may have enough private instruction to survive this course without the prerequisites. I can asses your ability in a matter of minuets. As of 2007 all high school AP courses and AP teachers needed to go through an approval procedure administered by the AP board. We have passed on both accounts and retain our AP status. See the letter at the bottom of the page.

Commonly used software:

By clicking the AP Music Theory icon in the top left you will be directed to the AP Music Theory site. All students of AP Music Theory class must download the latest pdf documentation of the current AP music test. Internet access and use of a computer are essential tools in our AP class. Although the school provides computer access you may find that you need more hours and the ability to load software on your own computer. I have provided a list of computer programs we use throughout the year as well as a very basic breakdown of the year's events.

The Course Outline:

  • Review of all prerequisite material
  • 1650-1800 harmony
  • Ear training
  • Sight singing
  • Composition

Dear James Egan,

The College Board is pleased to announce that your Music Theory course is authorized to use the "AP®" designation for the 2007-08 academic year. The College Board applauds and recognizes your efforts to provide your students with the academic rigor and college-level experience that is the promise of AP. I thank you for the time and effort you put into participating in the AP Course Audit.

What Does Authorization Mean?
The authorization of your course is an official recognition by the College Board that your course meets or exceeds the expectations colleges and universities have for your AP subject. Your syllabus was reviewed by experienced college and university faculty, who have confirmed that it outlines how your course provides a college-level learning opportunity to students. This authorization grants your school permission to use the "AP" designation on students' transcripts in association with the authorized course. In addition, your course will appear in a publicly-available ledger to be published on the Web in November 2007.

Renewing Your Authorization
Once your course has been authorized, you do not need to resubmit an AP Course Audit form and syllabus unless you transfer to a different school or if the College Board significantly revises the AP course. Prior to the 2008-09 school year, your principal will be sent instructions for how s/he can simply extend your authorization status for 2008-09.

We understand fully that you may need to modify or adapt your syllabus or course plan each academic year to address the needs of your students, to reflect new discoveries, to try out new approaches, and so on. You do not need to resubmit your syllabus when you modify it, so long as you are not changing your course so significantly as to eliminate from your curriculum one or more of the curricular requirements contained on the AP Course Audit form.

Thank you for all that you do to provide your students with a rigorous, college-level experience. The College Board appreciates all your efforts to connect students with college success.

Sincerely,

Trevor Packer
