Dear Family and Friends, Ive created this webpage to keep you posted on Cameron's progress. I will update this page on a regular basis, and you can check back periodically to see how he's doing, if you havent yet heard.
On March 16th, 2004, Cameron was diagnosed with "ALL", which is short for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. His treatment will last for 38 months. The cure rate for this type of Leukemia and his age group is very high - between 80-85%. The doctor says his prognosis is very good. It was caught early on and he has been responding very well to the chemotherapy. He is doing very well right now.
On Sunday, May 9th, Cameron came down with a fever and I had to take him to hospital again so they could start him on antibiotics right away and monitor him. They took blood tests to find out if he had a bacterial infection or not. Sure enough, he did so we had to stay until the blood tests came back negative for infection. He was released on Wednesday, May 12th, we were very happy to be home.
Since weve been home, Ive had to give him his antibiotics through his portacath twice daily. This is very new to me, but I had two choices: give it to him myself at home, or stay in the hospital for ten days until he was through with the medication. I opted to go home. It has been a little scary doing this myself, but Im learning. Ive run into a couple of problems, but a homecare nurse came out to the rescue. Thankfully, I stop giving the antibiotics on Wednesday, May 19th.
Cameron will begin his third phase of treatment on Wednesday, May 19th. It will last for 40 days and hopefully wont be too hard on him. He will have two different types of chemo every 10 days. The Doctor said the side effects might include mouth sores, muscle aches and weakness. Pray for our little guy and lets hope he stays strong!
Love, Kim
