Portrait: William Wesley Roland, Young studio, York, PA

Source: electronic copy received by N. Taber, 14 Aug 2000

The orginal photograph is in the care of Dianne (Gleim) Bowders of Tennessee and was identified by her maternal grandmother, Mabel (Zumbrun) Rishel, as Mabel's uncle Billy Roland.

From Dianne's note, dated 15 August 2000:

[T]he photo of Uncle Billy is 4 1/8" X 6 1/4". The words at the bottom are "Young, No. 12 N. George St., York, PA." It really does bring these relatives to life to see their photos.

In other notes, Dianne mentions that he was deaf and that she inherited his bed, wash stand, and dresser, as well as this "sepia photo taken when he was approx. 40 or 50 years old. He had the most handsome mustache." Since his death certificate states that he was born 1 October 1859, the portrait might have been taken about 1900.

This copy, which appears to be the same portrait, is from a photo album also in the care of Dianne (Gleim) Bowders of Tennessee. Note the watch chain through his waistcoat buttonhole. More research is needed to determine what time period the Young studio operated from this address in York, PA, which would help bracket the date of this portrait.
