“Rainbow Tesseract”
N. J. Taber
This piece is the perfect intersection between my fascination with
four-dimensional space, my delight in drawing crisp geometric figures, and my
love of bright, clear colors.

Excerpt from corporate newsletter article on 6 Oct 2004 about the exhibit:
Washington: Corporate Arts Program hosts fiber exhibit Oct. 4 - 30
The Corporate Arts Program is pleased to welcome to the MITRE 1 Atrium
Gallery a group of MITRE fiber artists.
The 11 exhibitors, all MITRE employees, work in various fiber media,
including hand-dyed fabrics; quilting; embroidery; card and loom
weaving; fabric stamping; and knitting and crochet with a variety of
yarns.
For many of the artists, working with fiber has been a life-long
activity. For others, fiber art was a late, but highly rewarding
discovery.

Latch hook wall hanging
I love geometric shapes and bright colors. I designed this piece after
reading a book on four-dimension visualization that describes how to
draw a four-dimensional cube (known as a "tesseract") in two
dimensions. I chose the rainbow coloring to highlight the eight
three-dimensional cubes that form the "sides" of the tesseract in the
same way that six squares form the "sides" of a cube. The white area in
the middle is the intersection of all eight cubes.

The book mentioned in the exhibition label (above) is Geometry, Relativity and the Fourth Dimension, by Rudolph v. B. Rucker, Dover Publications, Inc., New York, NY, 1977 (ISBN 0-486-23400-2). The directions it gives for drawing the tesseract (or hypercube) were "taken from a little 1913 book, A Primer of Higher Space,
by Claude Bragdon" (page 2). After reading the book while in college, I
was inspired to design and hook this wallhanging during the summer
between college and graduate school.
