January 2007

Early in January, after the deadline for sending in preemie caps had passed, while under the weather for a week, I made my first pair of socks.

First socks

They were a bit too baggy to fit into footwear, so I made a second pair!

Second socks

These too are a bit bulky, so they serve as fun house slippers. I think I know now what adjustments to make in future pairs.

The finale for the "Caps to the Capital" campaign was a day at the end of January spent in Washington, DC, to raise awareness in Congress about the plight of babies in developing countries. I was invited to be part of the Maryland delegation. I managed to finish a few more caps during the day, making them from yarn left over from that second pair of socks and giving them to the staffers and presenters at the various events. At the end of the day, a reception featured sample caps from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. While none of mine were in the Maryland basket, I was amazed at the diverse caps received during the campaign.

I've continued to make preemie caps, giving them away to friends and strangers as the Spirit moves me. I attach a small tag to each one with a message of cheer and caring. It's become a way to serve and minister to those around me.
