2005 April SAFE 5.4 Burglary Alert

Subject: SAFE 5.3: Burglary Alert
 
Facts:
In the last week, there have been 13 burglaries south of 50th St. in the 5th Precinct.  This burglar is using force to gain entry into unoccupied homes where he or she is stealing jewelry and cash.  These burglaries are occurring from 9am to 7pm while the victims are away.  Victims and neighbors have reported no suspect information to police.

The Minneapolis Police Department needs your help.  The below listed individual is currently wanted in connection with numerous burglary, and stolen auto cases across the southern Metro area.  In the 5th Precinct, he has committed burglaries primarily in the Armatage, Fulton, Kenny, Lynnhurst and southern ends of Kingfield and Linden Hills neighborhoods.
 
The Third and Fifth Precinct Property Crimes Units have an active PC Pick Up for Gerald Lee Dettman dob: 04/22/1972 for Burglary of dwelling.  It has been determined that Dettman usually commits his burglary in the morning hours, and is usually in a stolen vehicle.  The loss is usually small items including currency and jewelry. Dettman forces doors to gain entry. In one burglary, he cooked food in the victim’s home.
 
Bloomington PD also has an active Felony Warrant out on Gerald Lee Dettman for Burglary. Apple Valley and St. Paul Police also request help in locating Dettman.  Dettman will flee police to avoid arrest.
 
Dettmans relatives live near  the following locations:                  
53 St/46th Av. S

14 Av/6th St NE
42 St/27th Ave S
 
 It is unknown where he is staying at this time.
 
Do NOT confront Dettman directly if you observe him.  Contact 9-1-1 immediately to report your location, and if you observe him in a vehicle.
Additionally what you can do:
·         Watch out for your neighbors, especially in the alleys.
·         Call 911 to report suspicious activity or vehicles.  (Be sure to write down the license plate number.)
·        If you are away, consider using timers on radios, TVs, lights so it seems like someone is home.
·        Keep house and garage doors locked at all times, even when you are inside.
·        Install deadbolts with a 1 inch throw and a high security strike plate (6 inches long with 3 inch screws reaching into the door frame and stud).
·        Get to know your neighborhs so you know who belongs and who doesn’t.
·         Call (612) 673-2819 to schedule a Home Security Check.
