SAFE5.3 Serving the 5th Precinct, SAFE District 3

Within the last week, 5 burglaries have occurred in the Tangletown, Kingfield and Lynnhurst neighborhoods. All but one ocurred in the daytime. Most involved cutting or prying of a window screen or through an enclosed porch. Computers, cameras, cash, jewelry and electronics were some of the items stolen. Aug. 3, 4600 block of Garfield Ave. S. Aug. 4, 4400 block of Pillsbury Ave. S. Aug. 4, 4700 block of Pillsbury Ave. S. Aug. 4, 4800 block of Colfax Ave. S Aug. 9, 4500 block of Pleasant Ave. S.
During the Colfax burglary, a suspect was interrupted rifling through items on a homeowner's enclosed porch. Suspect was a black male, approximately 18 years old, and had an ID card around his neck on a string. Suspect fled when interrupted. It should be noted that police have seen an increase in the reporting of young men approaching residences in our Precinct claiming to be selling magazine subscriptions for a charity. The above male with ID would appear to fit this description.
Tips:
* Secure all windows by pinning while open or keep them closed and locked.
* Keep screen doors and porches locked at all times.
* Don't leave any valuables on your porch.
* When solicitors approach your home, ask for proper identification and never let them into your home!
* Call 911 to report suspicious activity/people.
