Harriet Vane
Sommerville scholar
mystery monger
and maker of alibis
She while the corpse of
pale Paul Alexis
was winding its way in
the wandering waters
trailed through the terraces
of the Resplendant:
Sat by the dance floor
Viewed the waltzers
Savaged them shrewdly
O daughter of Sommerville
with practical plans.
They danced with a gracefulness
Got from their grandsires
Overtly they offered a
fealty to frippery
on this spent battlefield
vanquished Victorians
dreaming of daughters who loved hearths and homes
Many a revanant
gigolo's carrion
Many a livid one
Many a sallow skin
Danced with an ostrich crepe
milliner's cap on, and
Danced in a party frock
in retro fashion, and
Danced while Alexis
was washed by the tides and -
made flailing gestures;
- dissolved from the world.
