	Vane's arms


Vane's lilly-necked, severe, informal
And feels a little out of place
Eyeing the central lake of dancers.
Two glide with fin de siecle grace
to palm court music. Carapaced
in help-I'm-frail flamingo
silk, the girl is pale and coy
resting upon her frog-faced gringo.
"All masks" Vane thinks "strong as a boy
she's earning on the coast's resorts
and breaks free on the tennis courts.
Ah well - they know the rules".
Then stepping out, Vane flees the lures
Of autre temps and autre moeurs.
