Whenever Paul Alexis took the floor,
And waltzed a lucky lady 'round the room,
The others all admired him, head to toe.
His continental grace dispelled their gloom.

Oh, he was handsomely arrayed,
And he was always charming when he talked.
Paul made pulses flutter when he said,
"Dance with me." (Not one lady ever balked.)

Yes, he was young, and soon to wear a crown,
And he was sweetly schooled in every grace.
In truth, we envied him and his reknown.
We often wished we could be in his place.

So on we plodded, cursing all the way.
We did without, and wished we had his life.
And Paul Alexis, one fine summer day,
Strolled on the sand and died beneath a knife.
