Let us go then, you and I
to the lounge, where music is nigh
and sit for a drink at a table;
Let us watch the dancing feats
the muttering retreats
of restless nights in watering holes
and whirling, faceless gigaloes:
gigaloes melancholy and fair
in evening dress with sleeked back hair
that lead one to an overwhelming question.
Oh, do not ask "what is it?" Let us go
and make our visit.
In the room the women sway to and fro
Talking of romances that come and go.
The masks that hide the features from the gaze
The clothes that transpose the features from the gaze,
Slip here and there through the corners of the evening
The gaze lingers, probing secrets of the game
Then lets fall the masks back into place
Slipped there by a sudden intuitive leap
And seeing that it was a soft June evening
Curled once about the room and fell asleep.
