She took her seat at the far end of the hall, which afforded her the best view of the assembled company. Her attention was immediately drawn to a pair giving a magificent display of dancing. The man was tall and gentlemanlike but his manner was decidedly affected and he looked about him with a most disagreeble countenance. His partner was a young woman who could not have been called handsome but she appeared to be in good spirits and caught the eye of the general populace of the hall in an excessively elegant gown of purple silk. Indeed the report in general circulation was that the woman was the daughter of a shipping merchant who had lost his fortune on a ship bound for Antibes. The man, it was said, had an income of five thousand a year.
