Harriet's Musings

When I consider how much money's spent
Upon the fashions of an earlier time
By those who pass their time in resort's clime,
Watching, while others danced and came and went,

The notes of waltzes all around us chime,
A game is played of weakness and of youth,
But very little here is made of truth.
Do they all know the rules who play this mime?

By night they quickly drink gin and vermouth.
By day their lives are of a different sort,
And gigolos are not their only port.
They bite the world of work with sharpened tooth

Far more than frippery they have been taught:
They also serve upon a tennis court.
