'Twas after the murder, yet there in the hall,
The air was quite festive; it looked like a ball,
With ladies in feathers and bustles and laces
Which apparently came from far times and far places.
A couple was dancing, a waltz was the song,
Their style it was expert; they did nothing wrong.
A woman walked in there; she thought she was plain,
Though she wryly considered that her name, it was Vane.
She watched all the women, who tried to hide age,
And thought that their faces were clear as a page.
They gibbered and jabbered and made quite a clatter,
But Harriet knew there was nothing the matter.
For the sun would rise up on the very next day,
And then all those feathers would be fast put away.
The ladies would stride, in their dresses quite loose
To work, or to play - this was all just a ruse,
A sort of a game where they all knew the rules,
And she wisely surmised they were not merely fools.
So she thought, as she sat, that they'd all be all right,
And she silently wished them a very good night.
