'Twas many and many a year ago in a hotel by the sea,
That there stayed a woman whom you may know
By the name of Harriet, she.
She was alone as she sat in the lounge
In this hotel by the sea,
But she studied the dancers as they whirled around
Led by Antoine and Charis.
The women were lovely in bustles and bows
These dancers by the sea,
And the men they were courtly as Brummel of old
In the game played out there by the sea.
But neither the clothing of days long one by
Nor the atmosphere there by the sea
Can ever restore the coy maidens of yore,
"Autre temps, autre moeurs" by the sea.
