Harriet
	Vane's arms

It is a truth no longer universally acknowleged, that a single woman in possesion of good looks must be in want of a husband. Harriet watched the dancers, half wishing for a partner to fetch her an ice and a few macaroons. But one pair held possession of the floor, gliding through the intricacies of a waltz, though several couple watched from the side, waiting for the country-dances to begin.

"A woman of independant means," thought Harriet to herself, " does not need to marry. She will never become that object of ridicule -- a poor spinster. A single woman with a very narrow income must be a ridiculous, disagreeable old maid, to be sure! but a woman of superior accompishments and fortune must always be respectable, and may be as sensible and pleasant as anybody else!"
