In the new KnitPicks catalog, they have Marcel's Sweater (Ravelry link) in a really intense blue. I've wanted to do it in that kind of color since it came out, and it's nice to see how good it looks.

In other news, the reason that I haven't been blogging much this week: Caleb has been away, and I undertook a big project. We have four full-sized bookshelves in the bedroom. (And two full and two half in one living room, and one full in the other living room. Then I have my desk books.) Since he left on Sunday, I have scanned and organized all of the books in the bedroom except for a few that are mixed in with a pile of magazines I need to sort and ten on top of the shelves. This is, according to the software, 701 books.

I'm using Booxter (but an older version), so for the newest books, with the ISBNs encoded on the barcodes, I just needed to scan them and then enter the location code. (Each room has a letter, each bookcase in each room has a letter, and each shelf has a number.) For the ones without the barcodes, I can type in the ISBN. For the ones older than that, some LCCNs show up, but not many. For the ones like the 1848 comparative grammar or the 1876 The Life of the Greeks and Romans, I type in the information. I also cleaned the shelves and books. I also have an office box overflowing with duplicates and books I don't want any more.

Twelve shelves remain. I really like having it all organized and knowing that I should be less likely that I buy copies of books I already have.

It's a good feeling.
It's a Needlekeep, since I was annoyed by losing the sock off of my needles as it tumbled around in my bag.

It seems to be working very well. The sock has been in the bag all vacation and for a few days before, and all is still seeming to stay in good order. It's so nice not to have to track down a needle that gt stuck in my iPod case.

A less good day when it comes to knitting

With the way today's knitting has been going, I wouldn't be surprised if the School's Out Sock spontaneously combusted.

We had a long car ride, so I packed the Orange Aran, the Summer Shawl, and the School's Out Sock. My goal was to work on the Orange Aran for a while, since it's the biggest MP 2008 thing I have left. (Other than it, it's doing the finishing on Chaise, finishing the Secret Project, a sock and a half, and the crewel work.)

As I was knitting with the first ball of yarn, I was finding a lot of clean breaks of two plies. This seemed odd, but I'd checked the rice basket where I was keeping the Orange Aran and my other supposedly active projects, and hadn't seen signs of bugs. I convinced myself that the yarn had just kept catching on the basket and switched to the other ball. That had two breaks, but they were to the ends. There were other areas where the plies had separated a bit, as if pulled. Looking at the pictures of it in stash in Ravelry, it looks as if some of the other battered skeins have the same thing.

Still, skeptical, once I'd done another repeat, putting me at a bit less than half through the back, I switched to the Summer Shawl. I worked on it for a while, getting up to almost the end of row 49, which would have put me at 12.3 percent.

Then, I noticed I'd misaligned the yarnovers in the last cast off point. I tried dropping back, but that didn't work. I pulled it off the needles and ripped, then put it back on and counted and recounted obsessively. I'm now at the start of row 39, which means that I lost about five percent of the shawl, including all of today's work.

The sock hasn't given me problems. Yet.

Well, after bellyaching about it for quite some time, I pulled both Icari out of the stash drawer and looked at them. The one in the multicolored Graceful Place was about five rows along, while the gray one that I'd worked on on the honeymoon and had rejected was 26 rows along.

I used the Ravelry search feature to look at the various kinds of yarn people used for their shawls. I decided that I liked the solid or mottled ones best; the structure of the feathers only at the bottom didn't look like what I wanted if the lace pattern had to work against the different stripes.

The gray Icarus I'd started on the honeymoon was still in the bag with the extra yarn. I was able to put it back on the needles; the yarn had clung together well enough that some of the markers were even still caught in it.

And so, fished out of the sea and ready to have its wings repaired, is:

By my calculations, there are about 141 rows on Icarus. According to the shawl calculator (using the math for the tip, since it starts with few stitches and works its way up), I'm about three percent of the way along.

It's going back in hibernation, on the needles this time, until the Summer Shawl is finished, though.

(Also, I have a new picture of the secret project up on Ravelry.)

I started this hat at the baseball game we went to on Thursday night. It's for the child of one of Caleb's former fellow grad students. It's a soft, sagey greenish-gray (very gender-neutral), not the tattletale gray it appears to be.

Pattern: Umbilical Cord Hat (pp. 188-189 Stitch and Bitch)

Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran

Needles: 7 dpns

Amount of yarn used: About 28 g.

Source of Yarn: Gift bag at Stitch and Pitch

Modifications: I shortened the tail on top a bit.

Thoughts: I thought that the instructions for using markers for the decreases were far too complicated. Still, it could be good for a very new beginner. I didn't like the yarn; it was too soft for me, and there were two broken and reknotted places very early in.

Still, it's a nice little hat. I also won't feel it's my fault now if the baby isn't born for a while, on the theory of the Harlot's sweater.
