Finished Little Devil Socks

Good things
The title of the last post was a Hitchhiker's Guide reference; something was hidden behind a sign marked "Beware of Leopard."
Good, although unbloggable, things seem to be going on. Of course, what with my naturally sunny outlook on life, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop directly on my head.
A good bloggable thing is that I finished turning the heel on the second Little Devil Sock:

I'm also daydreaming about lace. I want to make Juno Regina in Galaxy Shimmer. I'm thinking of a Flower Basket in the sock yarn Caleb got me for my birthday. I'm reconsidering the pink Icarus; I might do it in gray. Also, one of our friends will be having a baby in August, so I'm thinking of making the February Jacket for him.
Luckily, the yarn for Juno Regina won't be in until July, so I do have some hope of getting more done on MP 2008. I'm really close on the sleeves of Goin' Up, as well as Sheldon, but I really want to get the Secret Project done to a certain point in June.
Well, I do have a week left in June after school ends, and it would probably take a bit of time for the yarn to ship...

Red feet
Well, here's the sock:

Knotting the beads was fun and almost meditative. I saw it as more a way of saving money and getting exactly the clasp that I wanted than getting creative fulfillment, though. I guess it felt a lot like darning.
In anticipation of my stimulus payment, I got a pair of very red summer shoes:

They're totally impractical, except for the fact that they make me smile whenever I look at them.

Catching up
Thanks for the advice on the sweater. There is a screw that it could have caught on in my dresser, it's in a place where I could have leaned and caught it, and I'd washed it with something that could have caught it. I'll fix it and hope.
I've been working on untangling the second part of the yarn for the Little Devil socks. It's taken a fiendishly long time; this is the yarn I was carrying around in various bags. Still, it looks as if I've managed to do it without cutting the yarn.
I really like the idea of the Cute Expeditionary Force.
It looks as if tomorrow I'll be posting pictures of the Something Blue socks; I finished the knitting and binding off yesterday, so I just have to do the last bit of finishing.

Many pictures
Last night, Caleb and I went to a party at another grad student's place. I made a cake:

The marshmallows spell something out; it's probably clearer from a distance than up close.
Before the party I finished one of the socks:

I've since started on the second Something Blue sock; I didn't feel like untangling this:

Achilles sock?
I'm actually coming up on being on target on MP2008, which is rather scary. I finished the Rockstar socks a while back, I finished the purple suit (I even put a snap on the waistband) today, and the HGW sweater just needs the neckband and finishing.
I'm also steaming along nicely on this sock:

I decided that the Jaywalker incarnation of it was quite lovely, but I just didn't like knitting it. I went back and found this, and have been ribbing away.
I feel that I should change its name to the Achilles sock.

Slight change in plans...
Well, there was a slight change in plans. I never liked the heel on the Little Devil socks; the short row heel fits my foot much better. I'm going to be making a Jaywalker (on size ones, larger size, with a long tail cast on over two needles) instead.
I haven't been knitting much; one of my wrists has really been bothering me. I'm hoping to start again this week while I'm at a family thing.
Things I have learned this week:
1. Even though they are in similar looking bags in the freezer, chocolate chips and frozen vegetables cannot be used interchangeably.
2. A book can be bad historical fiction. A book can be bad history. Each genre, however heinous, may have its pleasant points. Combining the two, however, is a bad idea; despite your footnotes, you lose any credibility you have scraped together when you (a) describe in great detail with quotes and commentary on the language the contents of a letter that Our Hero reads, burns, and never speaks or thinks of again; (b) when you describe Our Hero's unuttered dying thoughts; (c) when you describe Our Hero as married on the blurb and never mention this in the content of the book, despite talking a lot about the woman you claim is his wife. (Also, don't try to describe clothes you don't understand. It shows.)
3. Reading a book about the well-known tubercular dentist Doc Holliday right before you have three teeth filled with plastic is not the best idea.
4. When you fill out vast reams of personal information and measurements on a website that purports to describe the best clothes for one's body type, really hoping to get some good advice, it is rather amazing how this scientific analysis immediately suggests garments that (a) emphasize two of one's less marvelous features, (b) utterly suppress one's better features, and (c) even at their sale price are in the neighborhood of one's seasonal clothing budget. (Yes, digging did give me some things that would look good, but the hundreds of dollars of chiffon trapeze tops I had to wade through first left me feeling suspicious.)
5. After that, however, it is rather lifting of the spirits to have one's husband give a detailed analysis and critique of how that is wrong and what is actually the best silhouette for you, saying he really likes the dress you just finished.

Might as well get all the information down.
I have a backlog of two pairs of socks that I
haven't blogged about. I'd been meaning to blog about the Something Blue socks
first, since I started them over a month ago, but on Saturday night I dreamed
that I was knitting on the Little Devil socks and suddenly, as I was knitting,
the colors changed into something that looked exactly like Neapolitan ice cream.
In the dream, the thing that amazed me most was not the change in pattern, but
the fact that the red all turned white.
In my grand quest for the
perfect sock, I'm trying out the heel from (link is to a pdf) Wendy's Fingering
Weight Toe-Up Socks with Gusset
Heel,
using my usual figure eight toe and doing the whole thing over 64 stitches.
I'm also still working on the Hyacinth
sweater for Afghans for Afghans; one sleeve is almost done.
This yarn is really nice to work with.
I wound it off on the 18th, while getting stuff packed, because I was sure that
the Resolution socks wouldn't last the whole weekend that we were spending
visiting Caleb's grandparents. I was right; I cast on for these late on
Saturday night. Not much interesting
has been going on here. I'm better, but still pretty drained from being sick.
Life is nice and quiet, which is very enjoyable to live, but not the most
compelling thing to read about.
