Smith's Castle

On Saturday, Caleb and I went to Smith's Castle, one of the early European settlements in RI. The grounds are beautiful; it overlooks a bit of harbor and has some lovely gardens. They also had two nice samplers on display, one from the 1760s and one from the 1820s.

I'd love to become a docent at a historic site someday; it strikes me as possibly one of the best things in the world to get to dress up in historic clothes and teach people cool stuff about history. It's too bad that the Romans never made it too New England.

I worked on the sock there and back, as well as while we were walking around the house:

Wedding Embroidery Report

I've finished the border!

I'm now working on the date, and I'm hoping to do a character or so a day for a while. This should be easier than the borders;progress will be much clearer for me.

In the middle

I’m now into the middle part of the Juno shawl!
IMG_4862.JPG Of course, the curse of lace means that the difference is hard to see.

Wedding Embroidery Report

I’ve still got two sides of the border to finish: IMG_4852.JPG
It’s amazing how starting work again will cut into one’s time.

Pawtucket Ceilidh Socks

At a PawSox game on Saturday, I got the first Ceilidh sock finished.

The yarn does look a lot like Blue Flame, but it’s the Rainbow from Ellen’s Half Pint Farm. I tried to get the green to show up a little better in the picture. It’s amazing how the summer has rushed by. I’m working on sewing back to school clothes, realizing that I’ll be back in front of my classes very soon.

CSA Tomatoes

We got our first tomatoes of the year!

Butter and different ribbing

On Sunday, Caleb and I saw Julie and Julia and Butter. It was a good film; I messed up the ribbing again, and then put the sock away so that I could concentrate better on all of the butter. That glorious, glorious butter.

It was a great movie. As promised, it did make us hungry. I also really loved seeing the affection between Julia and Paul.
Is it wrong that I want Julia as my style icon? She's just about exactly a foot taller than I am. Those pearls! The silk dresses! The cardigans! The brooches!

Of course, her socks aren't nearly as cool as this:

Wedding Embroidery Report: Bordered

I finished everything except the names, the date, and the crossings of parts of the border. I’m hoping that I’m able to get it done and framed in time for their third anniversary.

It's a good thing that Caleb and I both really like garlic and green beans. There was basil this week; since all of the Pestos are now on that big Italian menu in the sky, it was nice to get.

It's too hot today to knit lace.

Finished socks!

Pattern: Wendy's standard, with the sweet spot as an attempt to fix the heel hole.
Yarn: J. Knits Superwash Me sock
Needles:Size 1 dp
Size:Started with sixteen stitches on each needle, then went up to 64 total.
Amount of Yarn:68 g
Source of Yarn:Birthday present
Thoughts:This heel hole fix didn't entirely do it for me. I love the color of the socks, though; the color really does say 'Providence' to me.

CSA

Rumor has it that there will be no zucchini this year.

The garlic, onions, and green beans look really good. The salad and lettuce are always welcome, and I've been developing a taste for kohlrabi. Caleb likes the bok choi in dumplings.

Back in Providence

I'm back now. I'm planning to stay in Providence for all of August (with the exception of possible trips to Ikea or the like). I was at a professional development camp all this past week, and only got knitting done when I went to see the Star Trek movie. (The climactic finale ended up throwing off my ribbing. It was a good movie.)

Here's the sock:

I'm calling it the Ceilidh sock because I did a lot of it in Nova Scotia at various ceilidhs. (Q at one: What's a ceilidh? A: The Cape Breton version of a kitchen party.) (These that we went to were like concerts.) Something about the happy, frolicsome colors also makes me think of the music.
