Project, assigned Monday, Sep. 24, 2001.

  • Project due on Monday, Oct.. 01, 2001.

The objective of this project is to learn about Internet Security in general and identify some current issues in Internet Security.

The project explores a 1997 article, "Security of the Internet" Published in The Froehlich/Kent Encyclopedia of Telecommunications vol. 15. Marcel Dekker, New York, 1997, pp. 231-255. This article is online as a CERT¨ Coordination Center Report. I also distributed a hard copy in class on Monday, Sep. 24, 2001.

The article, "Security of the Internet" in part observed as posted on the Web in February, 1998:

As of 1996, the Internet connected an estimated 13 million computers in 195 countries on every continent, even Antarctica. The Internet is not a single network, but a worldwide collection of loosely connected networks that are accessible by individual computer hosts in a variety of ways, including gateways, routers, dial-up connections, and Internet service providers. The Internet is easily accessible to anyone with a computer and a network connection. Individuals and organizations worldwide can reach any point on the network without regard to national or geographic boundaries or time of day.

However, along with the convenience and easy access to information come new risks. Among them are the risks that valuable information will be lost, stolen, corrupted, or misused and that the computer systems will be corrupted. If information is recorded electronically and is available on networked computers, it is more vulnerable than if the same information is printed on paper and locked in a file cabinet. Intruders do not need to enter an office or home, and may not even be in the same country. They can steal or tamper with information without touching a piece of paper or a photocopier. They can create new electronic files, run their own programs, and hide evidence of their unauthorized activity.

For background information read the following material:

Expected outcomes:

Student will be able to identify the following:

  • Current issues in Internet Security.
  • Relate those issues to the cited above article .

Tasks:

Read the resources above.

  • Students may work together on this project.
  • Each student, however, must submit their own work for Instructor review.
  • Work must be completed as a Web Site, published to our internal Web server.
  • As much as possible, I am looking for your own words, rather than a simple" cut and paste." I am looking for some student analysis, that is critical thinking about these issues.

Complete the following tasks:

  1. Find three (3) articles on the World Wide Web discussing some current issue related to Internet Security. For each article:
    1. Provide a summary of the article.
    2. Describe how your chosen article relates to the "Security of the Internet"
    3. Include appropriate citation and hyperlinks to each article.
  2. Find one (1) article in the printed press discussing some current issue related to Internet Security. For this article:
    1. Provide a summary of the article.
    2. Describe how your chosen article relates to the "Security of the Internet"
    3. Include appropriate citation and hyperlinks, if applicable, to the article.
  3. You may submit your work in one of two formats:
    1. Either, as a MS Word document. (Please e-mail to me your Word document as an attachment). OR
    2. Post your work as a Web site on our internal Web server.
