Shows

So down we went to the wine and cheese in the afternoon (we were starv-ing) and found it more than adequate — a good selection of crackers and bread to go with the cheese, a nice selection of cheeses, a nice wine, nuts, olives, coffee.

Our first show was Bombay Dreams, one of the latest imports from London. It's a musical about India, about Bombay/Mumbai (as Bombay is the less PC name, I'll keep it) and Bollywood, and Philip and I decided to see it for the novelty and for the interest.

Here's what I can say about it. The costumes were good, and the acting & singing was solid. But it left a few things to be desired — like variety, for one. All the dance numbers were the same, only with different sets and different costumes. The story was trite (but so are Bollywood movies, so we'll forgive that), but the music was too (not so forgivable). My biggest disappointment, though, was the choreography, which I expected to include a whole lot more classical Indian dancing, and certainly a good deal more chutney dancing, but which was pretty run-of-the-mill musical jazz stuff done in Indian costumes, hello.

There were two characters that worked for sure. The leads were all right; the villains a little too obvious.

But it was enjoyable. Afterwards we ate at Maison down the street and spied on the stars from the show, who also seemed to eat there.
