ShowThe show tonight was
The
Producers. What can I say? It
was wonderful. For those of you who don't know, it's a musical of Mel Brooks'
movie of the same name. Mel Brooks wrote the story and the music for the
musical, and it's great. It's really clever, full of inside jokes and
references to other movies, other Mel Brooks movies, and so on.
(Philip wanted me to write that ever since we saw it, I've been saying "I could see that again." It's true. I could.) The performances were universally excellent. The whole story is over the top — about an unscrupulous (and failing) producer who meets a meek-n-mild accountant who tells him that a person could make more money putting on a flop than a hit. Together, they set out to make a Broadway flop, and buy the worst script and hire the worst director they can get. But the show ends up being a hit. The movie had little bits and pieces of the intended flop musical — primarily the song "Springtime for Hitler" in it; the show includes that number (of course) but many of the others are also great. I have to say I liked the musical better than the movie, but if you asked me why I wouldn't be able to say. A good time was had by all, even though every time I laughed I had to cough. I did so as quietly as I could, or waited for the applause. After the show we had dinner at Sardi's, and then we came back to the hotel to sleep.
A REALLY BAD picture of me to prove we were at Sardi's. Posted: Fri - October 8, 2004 at 06:23 PM |
