ESSAY #4: Refutation

For this essay you will need to write a refutation of the opposite point of view. This will mean that you have to research opposing points of view to your own, and to appreciate both the strong and the weak points of those arguments.

Some ideas to keep in mind:

  • Pick an argument that is as reasonable as your own. In refuting it, you will have to concede to to its strong points as well as highlight its weak points.
  • Evaluate the argument fairly and rationally. Avoid using fallacies to attack the position; rather, use reason in your evaluation of the argument.
  • Recognize the strong points of the argument, and be aware that your position may not be entirely correct; be prepared to adjust your own stand in the light of opposing points of view.
  • Point out the weaknesses of the argument. Aim to use evidence and support to demonstrate those weaknesses.

Here is a sample outline for the essay:

Introduction

  • Summarize the opposite point of view fairly.

Body

  • Concede to the strong points of the opposite point of view:
  • Highlight the various points that are weak. Support your own position by using evidence to illustrate the strengths of your argument and the weaknesses of the other.

Conclusion

In your conclusion, discuss both the strengths and the weaknesses of the argument. Provide an overall summary of the value of the argument, and end with the strongest points from your own argument.
