EVALUATION

1.     Assignments and journals............................ ............................................... ........... 15%

2.     Three quizzes @ 5% each............................................................................ ........... 15%

3.     Mid-semester exam.................................................................................... ........... 20%

4.     Two oral presentations @ 10% each............................................................ ........... 20%

5.     Term paper ............................................................................................... ........... 25%

6.     Participation (including attendance) ..................................................................... 5%

a.     Attendance is important.  Quizzes will incorporate both information contained in the texts and information discussed in class. If you miss class consistently, your grade will suffer.

b.     Participation in class is expected. No one is allowed to remain silent for the semester.  You will work in pairs and small groups as well as whole-class discussions.

c.      You are expected to confer with me during the semester by appointment/by email.  In these meetings we will discuss the contents of your journals.

d.     Tardiness is rude and will affect your grade as you will not be able to participate. Three late arrivals (10-20 minutes late) are equivalent to one absence.  If you arrive in class more than 20 minutes late, you will be marked absent.

ASSIGNMENTS, QUIZZES, PAPERS AND EXAMS

JOURNAL (5%)

You will be required to keep a journal of your progress in this class.  For this purpose, I suggest you purchase a small exercise book.  Your journal will consist of weekly notes about the readings and concepts we cover in class.  From time to time I will give you prompts and exercises to help you with journal entries.  I will arrange two conferences with you, the first in weeks 4-5 and the second in weeks 13-14 to discuss these journals.  These journals will the basis of assessment of your growth in the course.

SHORT ASSIGNMENTS (2-3 pages, typed, double-spaced with a one-inch margin all round) (10%)

There will be two of these, short essays which will be graded and these grades recorded for your final mark.  I will expect these assignments to grow out of one or more of your journal entries.

QUIZZES (15%)

There will be quizzes throughout the semester, one on each unit of the course.  They will consist primarily of multiple choice and short-answer questions, and will test your mastery of the various concepts we have covered in class.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS (20%)

Two oral presentations to the class on different topics will take place during the semester.  The first presentation will take place in the first half of the semester, and the second after mid-term.  Each presentation will be 10 minutes long, and will be followed by class discussion.

MID-SEMESTER EXAM (20%)

This will be given either just before or just after mid-term (depending on the calendar).  It will consist of an anthropological passage and short-answer questions that test your mastery and application of the concepts you have learned so far.

TERM PAPER (3-5 pages, typed, double-spaced with a one-inch margin all round) (25%)

There is no final examination in this course.  Instead, you will write a term paper, choosing one of a number of topics I will assign for you.  (If you wish to write on a topic of your choice, you must see me beforehand and make arrangements.)  This paper will require you to conduct research into the topic, and expect acknowledgement of at least THREE sources.  These must be acknowledged using the APA style.

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is defined by the College of the Bahamas as Òthe unacknowledged use of another personÕs workÓ (ÒCOB Policy on PlagiarismÓ 1).  You MUST acknowledge via proper APA citation any use of anyone elseÕs work whether it be a quotation (i.e., using their exact words), a paraphrase (i.e., summarizing or putting it in your own words), or even just the use of some information, ideas or concepts from another source.  If you plagiarize, you will receive an ÒFÓ for the assignment and be referred to appropriate Deans and Departments for disciplinary action.  Expulsion from COB is the prescribed penalty for continued plagiarism.

GENERAL ADVICE

1.     Keep up with the reading.  Prepare all of the readings and assignments BEFORE each class.

2.     Set up study groups to discuss topics and ideas with others outside of the classroom.

3.     Feel free to email me if you have difficulties or questions about the course.
