Travelling east on the road from Banjul to Janjangbureh. We have just
arrived in our small coach at the ferry crossing to take us from the
south bank
of the Gambia river over to Macarthy Island where both Janjangbureh and
the Bird Safari Camp are located. This shot shows the ferry on the
opposite
bank loading up with passengers.
|
The ferry is pulled across the river along a wire rope by a winch using
a diesel engine on the ferry itself. Simple and effective technology.
|
The ferry has just landed on the southern bank.

This is the ferry driver. Our coach is on board.

Ditto, but the other way. The river Gambia is divided into salt-water
and fresh-water zones. We are more than 300 Km up river here, and well
inside the fresh water area. That means crocodiles!

Cruising away a lazy afternoon on the River Gambia aboard a pirogue,
watching wildlife.
|
Some of the little islands are uninhabited (apparently for spiritual
reasons) but are cultivated. This one has a banana plantation. The
ripening fruit
are wrapped in cloth to prevent the monkeys and baboons eating
them. |

A nice reflection on the river. Even this far up the river it is
very
wide where there are no islands, demonstrating what a mighty waterway
it
is. |
Returning to the Bird Safari Camp at sunset.

Setting out in the morning to sail from Janjangbureh to Sepu, taking
over two hours.
|
The vegetation is very lush. |
