PRESIDENTŐS LETTER

Dear Members and Friends,

We are half way through our term as President and we continue to strive to enhance our theme of ŇGetting to Know You.Ó We are featuring the biographies of some of our active members who generously give their time and talent to support our students and our organization. Last issue we featured our Past President, George Gore. While seeking to move forward and grow, it is essential to reflect on our founders as well.

We have dared to be creative and welcome new faces and ideas; such as a Summer Luau Board Meeting in July, a Fall BengalŐs Bash, and to restructure our Annual Installation Dinner Dance. We are attempting to retain our worthy and proven traditions while being progressive and diverse enough to attract and welcome our more youthful alumni.

Through the dedication of Jorine Peaslack Combs, PatronŐs Chair and through your very generous donations, we have been able to grow our scholarship endeavors. Mary Lou Schmidt and Betty Bowen Oaks have excelled with enthusiastic membership efforts. Public Relations have continued to flourish under Stella Bowen, as has the Newsletter. Wally Gurren has been undauntedly committed to Circulation. We are blessed with a conscientious Board of Directors.

We welcome your comments and input and urge all to participate with us at your level of interest.

A special note of appreciation to all for the kind remembrances during our recent surgery and to so many who carried on with the work at hand.

We close this message with a heavy heart as each year we say farewell to some many dear alumni. Your President offers a salute to her beloved cousin, her mentor, her advisor, and an advocate for fairness and self-introspection. He was always available to serve and a warrior to the end. NHS Wildcat: Robert Lee Hesch, past President.

Sincerely,

Marlene Wilmot Gerding, 56

President

ALL CLASS REUNION-INSTALLATION DINNER

The all class reunion-installation dinner was held on Sunday, September 10, 2006, at the Southgate Community Center. It was a great evening! The food was excellent and our servers were delightful. In case you missed the dinner our servers were the Newport High School Cheerleaders. Following dinner we had a short program with remarks from Tete Turner, then the installation of officers: Wanda Robinson Quinn, Secretary; Lois Gutekunst Gore, Treasurer, and Melissa Stewart Hayden, Public Relations. A life membership award by was presented to Bill Brinkmann. The evening concluded with entertainment by Pam Thompson, vocalist, tour and cruise ship entertainer. Pam was marvelous and everyone had a great time.

MEMBERSHIP

You can see by the newsletter, that there are a number of years that we do not have a class representative. If your class is listed as not having a representative, please consider becoming one and call Mary Lou Schmidt at 859-441-1530.

We need to update our e-mail addresses. If you have an e-mail address, please send it to MLAS@fuse.net.

PATRONŐS FUND

Many thanks to all who contributed to the PatronŐs Fund this year. Once again, as in past years, through the generosity of our members and friends of the Newport schools, we were successful in raising funds to continue providing scholarships and incentives to our students. Keeping our students in school and helping them to obtain the best education possible is the goal of which we can all be proud.

Thank you,

Jorine Combs.

CINCINNATI BENGALS TO THE RESCUE

Deven Boxx, a linebacker for Newport High School football team wears a size seventeen shoe. These have to be ordered from California. At the beginning of the season, Deven needed new cleats. Too late to order them from California, Newport superintendent, Mike Brandt, called the BengalŐs to see if they could help. In no time, Deven was on his way to Paul Brown Stadium. There the equipment manager, Rob Recker gave him two pairs of linebacker gloves and two pairs of cleats. WAY TO GO BENGAL'S!

            We are in need of class representatives for the following years: 1931, 1973, 1975, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2006. COLLEGE QUALIFIERS INCREASE

Newport High School released data showing an increase in the accepted post secondary education. Data showed that sixty-nine percent of the 2006 graduating class was accepted. This is a significant increase over last year. Of the six-nine percent, fifty-two percent got accepted to four-year colleges or universities. The remaining eighteen percent got into two-year associate degree programs or other technical/vocational programs. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
