ALUMNI NEWPORTIAN NEWS
A PUBLICATION OF
NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI & ASSOCIATES
VOLUME 16-3 MAY 2006
Dear
Friends:
We
continue to be blessed with a group of volunteers with great work ethics and
creative thinking. Our February
meeting saw several faces from the past and we were treated to spending time
with our football coach, John Schlarmann and gaining much informative
information about our students. We
have been favored with a generous bequest from the estate of Jean Youtsey,
Class of Õ34, to enhance our scholarship and incentives giving.
The
computer systems are being updated and secured for future projects that will
further enable information sharing for all class representatives. Plans for the annual September Dinner
and Installation of Officers are underway. We regret having to move the event from the Syndicate but we
are planning a gala, glamorous evening for all to enjoy with entertainment and
celebration. We are seeking a safe
and accessible site to attract as many alumni as can be imagined. While we continue our theme of ÒGetting
to Know YouÓ, we are planning a menu of tried and true good food, creative
focus on students, engaging musical entertainment, and diverse
opportunities. Please engage as
many friends as possible, plan to support the PatronsÕ Fund, and attend this
event to celebrate all of our successes that you all so faithfully contributed
to over the years. We Newportians
are a proud and mighty force.
Together in harmony, letÕs look back to our sweet youth and focus on the
future of our Newport High School students. The near $20,000.00 in scholarships and $4,000.00 plus in
incentives is being distribute to our Newport High School students. One again, you have responded to their
academic needs.
God
Bless and Thank you!
Our
next Board meeting is May 11, 2006 in the teacherÕs lounge of the Newport High
School. All members are
welcome. Come get involved.
Our
next Membership Dinner Meeting is May 18, 2006 at the Newport High School
Library at 6:00 PM. Make your
reservations now the form is enclosed.
Come join the best Alumni in the Greater Cincinnati Area.
SEEKING NHS MEMORABILIA FOR PROPOSED DISPLAY AT
OLD SCHOOL
Newport
Independent School Board of Education is considering a project to enhance the
Eighth Street entry area of the Newport Middle School. This was known to former graduates as
the First Floor Main entrance to the Old NHS. The area now houses the Welcome Center, etc. Superintendent Brandt is seeking to
renovate the hall area where the auditorium doors were formerly located. This wall is intended to contain a
section to honor veterans and to display Newport School memorabilia. The NHSA&A are assisting the project
by seeking any memorabilia that alumni may have and wish to donate to the
display. Contact Marlene Wilmot
Gerding, Class of 1956 (859) 442-9990 for further details.

WELCOME MIKE TO THE CLASS OF 1954
The
following letter was received from C. ÒMikeÓ Teal:
I
dropped out of senior class at NHS in January 1954 to enlist in USMC and was in
Korea June 1954 – March 1955.
Then I went on to complete a career in the USMC and USAF. Served in Nam from February 1968
– February 1969 but always missed getting my HS diploma.
I
did finish HS GED while in Korea and graduated from University of Nebraska at
Omaha in 1970 and NKU in 1984 with BS.
Finally
I graduated from NHS in June 2004 (took me 50 years, slow learner). Now I really feel a member of the CLASS
OF 1954.
NEW WEB SITE FOR THE CLASS OF 1948.
Hi Everyone,
Most of you are probably aware of the reunion
websites, www.classmates.com and www.reunion.com. You also no doubt know that
you are able to register on both of these websites, but to obtain any
information you are required to pay a membership fee. I have become aware of
another reunion website that does not require a fee in order to register, to
view or to obtain information. I have set up a site for the Class of 1948 on www.classreport.com. This Class-Based
Alumni Website does not require a fee, but is funded by voluntary contributions
from the members of each class. Contributions are not required to keep class
sites online and functional. Classreport.com provides non-commercial,
self-funded class reunion websites for every graduating class of every high
school and extends full access to all class members without regard to financial ability. All classes during their first
5 five years following graduation or once they have passed 50 years following
graduation are funded by the contributions of others.
This Alumni Website features dynamic changing
content daily. Stop in to view current Class News. Exchange opinions and stay
up to date with the Message Board. View the Featured Alumni biography of the
day. Got a great photo you want to share, a Personal or a Business Website,
post them in your Personal Profile. Did you just return from a great vacation?
Tell your classmates about it! Proud of how many children or grandchildren you
have? Let your friends know their names. Send a birthday greeting to a class
member listed in the Upcoming Birthdays panel. Book and Movie Reviews, Favorite
Recipes and Featured Links will
also keep one checking in regularly to see what is new.
A site is already in place for the class of almost
every high school. A class member may log onto the site for his class at any
time. However, the site will be
more active and interesting if one or two members from each class volunteer to
be the Class Administrator. Visit the Class of 1948 site at: http://classreport.com/usa/ky/newport/nhs/1948
to see how our class site is set up. Also to view an active site that has been
online for 2 years visit: http://classreport.com/usa/ca/fairfield/vhs/1973,
which is my sonÕs class at Vanden High School in Fairfield, California. This
site was a great help to his class in 2004 with the reunion they had for the
classes of 1970 thru 1975. To visit your class site use the address for the
class of 1948, but insert the year you graduated instead of the 1948. To view
the sites of other NHS classes,
scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the year that you want to visit.
Once you are on your class site, to enter your
contact information click on ÒFirst Visit Here – Click to Register.Ó
Follow the on screen instruction to sign in. When entering or looking for a
name be sure to use your last name when you were a student at Newport High. You
will need to create a password. Once signed in please enter your email address,
mailing address and phone number and
fill out the other fields of information. Your street address and phone
number will be kept confidential and is not accessible by other users of the
site (just the site administrator.) This information is needed in order to
communicate with you regarding reunions, etc. The site is very helpful for
reunion committees when at least one committee member is the site
administrator.
This Alumni Website is hosted by classreport.com
and is a refreshing change from the large commercial alumni directories.
Classreport.com has no advertising, no pop-ups, no span and no registration fees. Classreport.com pledges
to never sell names and addresses to third parties and to let the website be
administered exclusively by Newport High School Alumni. If anyone has questions
or problems, they can contact me for help at gimwcm@aol.com
or gimwcm@earthlink.net. Also for the
classes before 1948, please contact me.
