ALUMNI NEWPORTIAN NEWS
A PUBLICATION OF
NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI & ASSOCIATES
VOLUME 16-2
FEBRUARY 2006
Dear
Alumni and Friends,
We
continue with our ÒGetting To Know YouÓ project as we enjoyed a social get
together with a Bengal Bash on December 4, 2005 at the Southgate Community
Center. We had ten new faces at
the event and we watched the Bengals win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. At this writing, it looks like the
Bengals are scheduled for a repeat. The food was good and plentiful, the drinks
were great, and we had an enjoyable time!
In the future, we need everyoneÕs support for these events to be
meaningful to the organizationÕs future. This was not a fund raising event but
a social gathering. We scheduled
an Alumni Nite at the NHS Basketball Game on December 8th but we
were forced to cancel due to snow.
We will try to reschedule the event later.
The
Committee for the Annual Installation Dinner Dance is meeting to consider a
change of sites in order to preserve the dignity and pride in the event that
has been demonstrated in the past. Please offer your comments. Our PatronÕs Committee is being chaired
by Jorine Peaslack Combs and our students rely on the fundÕs growth as well as
the members wish to continue to expand our association. In the past, Mary Lou Schmidt has
demonstrated a very successful effort with the fund and she has been dedicated
to the FundÕs continued success.
We
invite you to the General Membership Meeting on Thursday February 16th,
2006 at 6:30 p.m. at the Newport High School in the Library.
We
offer our most sincere sympathy to the families, friends, and teachers of our
NHS students Sunshine Richardson and Phillip Leslie.
Sincerely,
Marlene
Wilmot Gerding, 56
President

Our
sincere appreciation to Jerry King, class of 1953, for all his hard work
keeping up a wonderful web site.
Now it is our turn to help Jerry.
The database of Newport High School Alumni with e-mail capability has
approximately 500 members of these about 20% (almost 100) are not working. This in turn floods JerryÕs mailbox
with error messages. We can help
Jerry greatly by sending him an e-mail message at NHS_Alumni@Mac.com
with any changes in our e-mail addresses.
If you havenÕt received a message recently, your e-mail address in the
database is probably wrong. In
addition we can help him further by locating classmates, friends and
associates, that have fallen from the ÒknownÓ e-mail community. Please visit the following web site
http://tinyurl.com/2gysx
and click on ÒTheir e-mail doesnÕt work any more! Help locate AlumniÓ link. For the most recent set of bad addresses go to http://tinyurl.com/87ohl. For long standing bad e-mail addresses
go to http://tinyurl.com/aemo7. Thanks again for all your hard
work, Jerry.
CLASS REPRESENTATIVES
We are in need of class representatives for the following years: 1934, 1957, 1959, 1973, 1981, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2005. Please think about becoming a volunteer for your class. Keep in touch with your former class mates can be quite rewarding.
YOUR CLASS REPS NEED TO REPORT
To
provide the information our readers want to know, our Class Reps need to
provide the information to the editor.
Many people inquire why they have no news from their class? The only answer I can give, ÒIf you
give me news, I will try to include it in the Newsletter.Ó Most grads not only want to be informed
of deceased classmates, but also would like to hear from classmates including
information of people they do not often see. Shut-ins would appreciate learning of your health, travel,
and other items of interest concerning their classmates. A card or phone call is always a
welcome treat. If you have any
information you would like to share with your class or friends, contact me
direct: Stella Bowen, 18 Arbor Drive, Highland Heights, KY 41076 or phone
859-781-5424. My e-mail address is SBowen0018@aol.com. My thanks to all the representatives
who provided class information for this publication.
FOOTBALL AND MARCHING BAND
The
editor wishes to apologize to other dedicated students who were both band
members and football players.
Darlene Brady Knepshield, Class of 1960 was kind enough to furnish me
with the following information:
Kevin Hitchcock and Aaron Marsee were both band members in the Class of
2000 as well as D. J. Smith in classes of 2002 and 2003. Also Sally Daines Boeing Class of 1960
was cheerleader and also played in the band.
Newsletter
information was taken from a newspaper article. I am sorry for any confusion I may have caused in this
matter. If anyone else would like
his or her name published, please let me know my E-mail address is SBowen0018@aol.com.
CLASS OF 1956 – 50TH REUNION
The Class of 1956 will hold its 50th Reunion the weekend of May 19th, 20th, & 21st. A full weekend of activities is planned as the class celebrates the golden anniversary of its high school graduation. On Friday morning, there will be an 18-hole golf scramble as well as a trip to the Argosy Casino. Friday evening will find the group socializing at the Riverside Marina in Dayton. The activities continue on Saturday with lunch at River Downs, where a race will be named in the class's honor. Saturday evening is the main event, with a sit-down dinner at the Cold Spring Roadhouse. The Reunion will conclude on Sunday with a brunch boat ride on the Ohio River. Detailed information was sent to all classmates the first week in January. Reservations deadline is March 1st. For additional information, contact Roberta Caudill Jones at 859-586-9280 or Bob Wilson at 859-441-2660.
A TASTE OF REALITY
How
to balance their budget for one month, assuming that they had at least one
child and a profession? The
freshmen class once again participated in a glimpse of life after high school
courtesy of the Reality Store.
This year 211 students participated and they assumed their age to be 26
for the exercise. They were
encouraged to save at least 10% of their salary. The exercise consisted of 14 booths run by volunteers from
local business and organizations.
This event was sponsored by the school and the Campbell Extension
Service. As you can imagine they
got quite a shock of the real world trying to juggle the utilities, housing,
food, transportation and entertainment costs. The students who left the Reality Store in the black were
awarded Payday candy bars. The
students who left in the red were awarded Zero candy bars.

maintaining the directory. No web site is authorized to use the name
"Newport High School Alumni & Associates, Inc." except our own
web site. This is the name incorporated in the State of Kentucky and recognized
by the Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit, charitable organization with a
