Dr. Michael Brandt came to the Newport Independent School System from Cincinnati upon the retirement of Dr. Sullivan. Dr. Brandt's desire is to build a better school for the students and bring the community into an awareness that each one depends upon the other to succeed in improving the future for both. Only a few of the items are mentioned here, and they are positive in both thought and action.
SCHOOLMATCH, a national consulting firm reported on the strengths and weaknesses of the school district financed by a grant from the Heinz Foundation. The report praised the system for low teacher absence, well-maintained schools, caring staff, strong financial management, respect for student diversity and ACT scores which were better then systems with similar demographics.
To get the community involved he has held sessions with the Mayor and the city council. He has held community meetings where his intent has been explained and community members continued with a question and answer period. He has provided for a new exercise room and fitness facility at the high school. He has provided ways to improve the health of the students, and the list goes on.........
We in the alumni help the students with incentive programs and scholarships. We can also help by supporting Dr. Brandt in his positive direction for "our" school system. Working together is the answer.

This is a way you can show your appreciation for the education you received from Newport High School. Your contribution adds to the majority of funds raised for scholarships given each year. We can help others not as fortunate as us to help their dreams come true. Many thanks to all. The Patrons ad raises much of this fund for the scholarships and incentives. WE hope to raise enough to meet our budget of $15,500,00 for scholarships and incentives. Many thanks also to Mary Lou Schmidt for all her hard work to raise these funds for scholarships.
The Scholarship Committee led by Lois Gore and the Executive Committee are working on the scholarship forms to be distributed at the school. Selection for scholarships to be presented in May 2005.
2004-2005 BUDGET APPROVED
At the last membership meeting held November 18, 2004, the budget for 2004-2005 was submitted and approved. The operating expenses are projected to be $4375.00 and the Scholarships / Incentives fund is $15,500.00. The operating expenses include all printing and mailing cost of the Newsletter.
Volunteers to serve on committees. We need you to make the organization prosper and grow. This is a good way to see what the membership is doing for the students of Newport High and see how the students appreciate what we are doing. Ask anyone who has helped serve Ice cream at the school or worked collating a newsletter and installing mailing labels. Mary Lou can always use help getting out the Patron Ad mailing.
Did you graduate in any of the following classes? We are missing representatives for the classes of 1971,1973, 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996,1998,1999, and 2001, 2002, If one of the above classes include your graduating class, please consider calling Mary Lou Schmidt to volunteer to serve 859-441-1530. This is a good way to keep informed of your classmates.
At times graduates try to find out if the class is going to have a reunion. Sometimes they call the High School or the Board of Education. These calls are usually referred to the Alumni. If you do not keep us informed of your plans, we can not help the individuals. We are trying to post reunions and get-togethers in the Newsletter. Just let us know and we will list your reunion or get-together in the section with all the other reunions or get-togethers planned.
Mary Lou is soliciting membership for this fiscal year. Your Five dollars is a small amount to ask. Life time membership is $150.00. You may want to consider this. DonŐt forget the Endowment and Scholarship funds.

June lives in Central Florida on Crooked Lake Shore. Had severe damage 8/13/04 from Hurricane Charley. Had a new roof installed 8/24/04 and the house burned down 8/27/04, a total loss. Her son is an interior designer and works with an architect and deigned a new house on same lot. All three hurricanes crossed Crooked Lake. So we are survivors!!1 June Ryan
The man considered by many, as a pillar of knowledge of the City of Newport and its history has died January 26, 2005. Anytime someone wanted to know something about the city; theyŐd go to him. He was a part of the reform group Committee of 500. He was especially appreciated after his work on the Newport bicentennial celebration in 1995. Leroy is survived by his wife, Wilma Lape Hoffman; daughters Carol Lee Damron and Shirley Ann Turner; seven grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Leroy has taken a world of knowledge with him and he will be missed by all who knew him. Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends.
