ANOTHER YEAR FOR THE STUDENTS
Our fiscal year ends September 30, 2004 and our new year starts October 1, 2004. This is another year that the board and MEMBERS can be proud of. Please note the word MEMBERS is capitalized because the members are the backbone of the organization. The board exists to serve the MEMBERS and the MEMBERS are there to serve the STUDENTS, which is the purpose of the association. We had 1142 members listed for the year 2004 and over 50% of those members plus 65 new members have already enrolled for the next fiscal ear. Our meetings are pleasant and filled with spirit of comadarery. The duration of the meetings have been reduced to an average of an hour and a half. More faces are beginning to reappear, with enthusiasm to do all they can. With these attitudes the organization can not fail and the students will always be ŇFOREMOSTÓ.
The members this year elected Marlene Gerding to continue as Secretary and Lois Gore to continue as Treasurer. Stella Bowen has been elected to the board as Public Relations Director. As president, I deeply appreciate the time given and the talent of these individuals.
We were extremely pleased to have the new superintendent and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Brandt; the new principal of NHS Scott Draud; and the chairman of the Board of Education, Tete Turner and his wife Shirley attended our Annual Officer Installation / Dinner Dance this year. Mike, Scott and Tete each spoke on how proud they were of our organization and pledged to assist in any way they can to further our support of the students.
Remember, our board meetings are open to all of our members- not just board members. Our next meeting is November 11th and our next membership meeting is November 18, 2004. Join us at these next meetings....weŐd love to share our thoughts with you.
Anyone wishing to be an officer, or to serve on a committee, please complete and return it to: GEORGE GORE, N.H.S.A.& A, PO BOX 75129, FT THOMAS KY. 41075.
George Gore, President
MARGE SMITH BURKE
We received this note from Charlette Perry, grand-daughter of Marge Burke:
To whom it may concern:
My grandmother, Margaret Smith Burke, is perhaps your oldest alumnus; she graduated Newport High School in 1925 and is still, at the age of 97, very proud of the accomplishment. On the wall she has a certificate from the NHS Alumni Associates commending her later work with your organization.
Grandma loves to recount stories from NHS: going to the Prom with the captain of the football team, and being voted the Ňbest dancerÓ her senior year! It is quite apparent that her years at Newport High were happy ones.
I write a humble request: could the NHS Alumni send my grand-mother, Margaret, a short note or a piece of printed literature, that would remind her of Newport High? This would be a wonderful gift to her, as she so fondly treasures NHS and loves all the news from the past.
The address is Margaret Smith Burke, Atria Highlands Crossing Farrell Drive; Covington, Ky. 41011
Sincerely,
Charlette Perry
Editor; How about it? Send any information to her about NHS.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Volunteers to serve on committees. We need you to make the organization prosper and grow. This is a good way to see what the membership is doing for the students of Newport High and see how the students appreciate what we are doing. Ask anyone who has helped serve Ice cream at the school or worked collating a newsletter and installing mailing labels. Mary Lou can always use help getting out the Patron Ad mailing.
OUR NEXT MEETINGS
Our next board meeting is November 11, 2004. All members are welcome. Come get involved with the organization. Join in with the fun.
Our next membership dessert meeting is November 18, 2004. At this meeting we adopt the Budget for 2004-2005. We need younger persons to join in the activities. The Organization needs your help. It is very pleasurable to see what your efforts can do.
ALL CLASS REUNION DINNER DANCE & INSTALLATION
The All Class Reunion Dinner Dance was held September 12, 2004 at the Coconut Grove restaurant. To start the evening off, we had Dennis Hurm, a magician to entertain us, the guests at the tables. He was very good. After dinner Ron Purdon and his orchestra played the music you like to hear. In attendance were 151 people. If you did not attend, you missed a pleasant evening. Hope to see you next year.
PATRONS FUND
This is a way you can show your appreciation for the education you received from Newport High School. Your contribution adds to the majority of funds raised for the scholarships given each year. We can help others not as fortunate as us to help their dreams come true.
Many thanks to all.
The Patrons ad raised $8,876.86 for 2005. Many thanks also to Mary Lou Schmidt for all her hard work to raise these funds for scholarships.
SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
The scholarship committee led by Lois Gore and the Executive Committee are working on the scholarship forms to be distributed at the school. As soon as the Budget is approved, we will we able to select the number of scholarships to be presented in May 2005.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
The elected persons are Lois Gore Treasurer, Marlene Gerding Secretary, and Stella Bowen Publicity Director by unanimous vote. These officers were installed at the All Alumni Dinner.
CLASS REPRESENTATIVES
Did you graduate in any of the following classes? We are missing representatives for the classes of 1971,1973, 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996,1998,1999, and 2001, 2002, If one of the above classes include your graduating class, please consider calling Mary Lou Schmidt to volunteer to serve 859-441-1530. This is a good way to keep informed of your classmates.
INQUIRIES FOR CLASS REUNIONS
At times graduates try to find out if the class is going to have a reunion. Sometimes they call the High School or the Board of Education.
These calls are usually referred to the Alumni. If you do not keep us informed of your plans, we can not help the individuals. We are trying to post reunions and get-togethers in the Newsletter. Just let us know and we will list your reunion or get-together in the section with all the other reunions or get-togethers planned.
CHANGE OF ADDRESSES
We put two labels on to save postage for couples except when balloting, then individual letters are sent with ballots. The label tells when your dues are paid. If not correct notify Mary Lou Schmidt.
MEMBERSHIP OCTOBER 1,2004-SEPTEMBER 30, 2005
Mary Lou is soliciting membership for this fiscal year. Your Five dollars is a small amount to ask. Life time membership is $150.00. You may want to consider this. DonŐt forget the Endowment and Scholarship funds. We had over 1142 members and 22 deceased members for the year ending September 2004
POT OF GOLD
At the All Class Reunion, the pot of gold had receipts of $200.00 and as $100.00 was given as prize money. The scholarship was given the $100.00 profit.
AFTER PROM AT NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL
Many thanks to Bill Brinkmann Chairman for the Ice Cream Booth for the After Prom Party. He and his committee did a great job and his daughter, Nancy Bay has consented to return again next year as chairperson. If you would like to help, call 859-781-1441.
YOUR CLASS REPS NEED TO REPORT
To provide the information our readers want to know, our Class Reps need to provide the information to the editor. Many people inquire why they have no news from your class. The only answer I can give, ŇIf you give me news, I will try to include it in the Newsletter.Ó
Most grads not only want to be informed of deceased classmates, but also would like to hear from classmates including information of people they do not see often.
Shut-inŐs would appreciate hearing of your health problems, travel, or other it
If you have any information you would like to share with your class or friends, contact me direct at Bob Hesch, 21 Audubon Place, Ft. Thomas, KY 41075 or phone 859-441-0695. My E- mail address is RLHESCH@FUSE.NET.
