MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

This past month has been one filled with four major events for the Alumni Association, three very joyous ones and one very sad one.

The first joyous event occurred on May 7th when the Alumni Association again helped with the After Prom. To work in the wee hours of the morning making milkshakes and banana splits is a new experience for many of us. Were we tired?, of course .Was it worth it?, you bet. To see these high school students enjoying what we old folks call "good, clean fun" made us say, "Sleep? We can do that later. This is great!"

Secondly, on May 17th, the Alumni Association presented 17 scholarships to graduating seniors at the Senior Awards Night held at the new "Coconut Grove." To learn of the accomplishments of these fine young people warmed my heart, and to know that the scholarships we presented made furthering their education a reality for many of these students, pointed out to me so clearly what our organization is all about. None of these scholarships would have been possible without the generous donations of you, our members. Thank you so much.

Another joyous event took place on May 20th when we held our annual May dinner. What a delight it was to see such a great turnout, the best we've had in years, and to see so many new faces. Each and every member is important to this organization and we hope to see all of you at our next event that will be the annual Installation Dinner Dance to be held on Sunday, September 12th at the "Coconut Grove."

I end this message on a sad note. With the close of the school year, Mr. Jack Patterson retired. As principal of the high school, Jack worked closely with the Alumni Association for many years.

I never knew Jack Patterson until I retired and moved back to Northern Kentucky in 1997, and even during the first few years, my knowledge of him was scant. When I became a member of the Alumni Association's Board of Directors, and was able to talk and work with Jack, I began to realize what a dedicated person he is. He worked for the progress and success of each student on an individual basis. He knew most of the students by name; not because they were good sports players, not because they helped out in the office, not even because they may have been called into the office for infractions, but because he wanted to know about them so he could best help them make a future for themselves when they graduated.

Jack's support of the Alumni Association has been superb. If we needed a meeting room, it was there. If we needed a lectern with a microphone, it was there. Jack made sure coffee was always ready at our membership meetings and for the past few years, he single-handedly took care of the Student Incentives we budget for the high school. If there was anything he could do for us, he did it.

His devotion and dedication to all of us could not have been better. Jack has spent many hours of his own time for the sake of the students. He is the Best of the Best. We all wish Jack a retirement filled with the happy things in life he enjoys.

Jack Patterson, we are going to miss you!!

George Gore, President

INQUIRIES FOR CLASS REUNIONS

At times graduates try to find out if the class is going to have a reunion. Sometimes they call the High School or the Board of Education. These calls are usually referred to the Alumni. If you do not keep us informed of your plans, we cannot help the individuals. We are trying to post reunions and get-togethers in the Newsletter. Just let us know and we will list your reunion or get-together in the section with all the other reunions or get-togethers planned.

CHANGE OF ADDRESSES

We put two labels on to save postage for couples except when balloting, then individual letters are sent with ballots. The label tells when your dues are paid. If not correct notify Mary Lou Schmidt.

Mary Lou is soliciting membership for this fiscal year. Your Membership Application is included in this issue to be sent returned by September. Thanks to all who send in their dues. AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO REUNION COMMITTEES

YOUR CLASS REPS NEED TO REPORT

To provide the information our readers want to know, our Class Reps need to provide the information to the editor. Many people inquire why they have no news from your class. The only answer I can give, if you give me news, I will try to include it in the Newsletter. Most grads not only want to be informed of deceased classmates, but also would like to hear from classmates including information of people they do not see often. Shut-ins would appreciate hearing of your health problems, travel, or other items of interest. Send a card or phone call while they are recuperating. If you have any information you would like to share with your class or friends, contact me direct at Bob Hesch, 21 Audubon Place, Ft. Thomas, KY 41075 or phone 859-441-0695. My E- mail address is RLHESCH@FUSE.NET.

. IF WE BUILD IT, IT WILL COME BACK- EVEN BETTER!

Talk is cheap. But how can we have a new theatre for NHS. First we had to put this dream in motion. To contribute to the Newport High School Theatre Fund a fund was established through the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. The fund is now at approximately $7000.00We had hoped the University of Cincinnati School of Architecture would adopt this as a class project, but that has fallen through. Our committee lacks the expertise to make the drawings and a model of our dream. Once in place we can work on grants, gifts and fundraisers for the theatre. We envision a 600-seat theatre, attached to the Seventh Street end of the school. This facility will have dressing rooms, prop rooms, and practice rooms, and to have a fly system for scenery and back drops. The theatre can be used for plays, musicals, variety shows, concerts, and assemblies. It will facilitate large group instruction, special performances, talks, or presentations from outside sources.

If you can donate your talents to this project it would be greatly appreciated. Contact Bill Feldman at the Newport High School, phone 859-292-3023. E-mail<bfeldman@Newport.k12.ky.us>. Home phone 859-441-1300.

If you wish to donate to the fund, send your tax-deductible donation to:
