A Membership Application is contained in this printing.
We need the support of all for the Scholarship Fund to support the students of Newport High. Our budget has $14500. 00 included for Incentives and Scholarship for 2004-2005.
Give us your feedback if you would like for us to continue putting this information on the web site.
DonŐt forget to join and send in your dues. Make check payable to NHSA&A, Inc. and mail to PO Box 75129, Ft. Thomas, KY. 41075-0129.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
It was good to see many of you at the meeting in November. Thanks to Wanda Castor Smith and her committee for the delicious desserts. If you missed this meeting, you missed a truly great talk by Jack Patterson, principal at the high school. He told us how as the leader at the school, his focus has always been what is best for the students and how that focus continues to be concentrated on the children rather than merely numbers. Jack titled his talk "Ten Years With The Alumni". He explained to us how gratifying it was to have such active support from the Alumni Association and what it means to the students, things that simply wouldnŐt happen without our financial and participatory support. He told us how that support has grown over the past ten years and how much it means to the staff, faculty, and students to have the Alumni Association actively involved. Thank you Jack, for sharing your thoughts with us.
I hope to see all of you at our February dessert meeting which will be held at the Newport Middle School (behind the old high school). Enter on Columbia Street between Eight and Ninth Streets. If you havenŐt seen this school, plan to come early for a tour of this wonderful facility.
The Alumni Association is making a definite positive impact at both the high school and the middle school. None of this would be possible without the support of all of you, our members. Thank you so much for all you do.
Your President,
George Gore
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Come to the meeting and meet your new officers, President George Gore ‘51, Vice President Tim McCarthy ‘78, Program Director Betty Walker Johnson ‘41. The candidates elected shall serve for the fiscal year 2003-2005, starting October 1, 2003 for two years
OUR NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING FEBRUARY 19, 2004 f8! 0
The next membership meeting will be held at the Newport Middle School. Enter on Columbia Street between 8th and 9th Streets. This will be a dessert meeting. This is an opportunity to visit and tour the Middle School. Great facilities and the most modern school in Newport. A short business meeting to follow.
CLASS REPRESENTATIVES
Did you graduate in any of the following classes? We are missing representatives for the classes of 1971, 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993 1996,1998,1999, and 2001, 2002, 2003. If one of the above classes includes your graduating class, please consider calling Mary Lou Schmidt to volunteer to serve. This is a good way to keep informed of your classmates.
INQUIRIES FOR CLASS REUNIONS
At times graduates try to find out if the class is going to have a reunion. Sometimes they call the High School or the Board of Education. These calls are usually referred to the Alumni. If you do not keep us informed of your plans, we cannot help the individuals. We are trying to post reunions and get-togethers in the Newsletter. Just let us know and we will list your reunion or get-together in the section with all the other reunions or get-togethers planned.
CHANGE OF ADDRESSES
We put two labels on to save postage for couples except when balloting, then individual letters are sent with ballots. The label tells when your dues are paid. If not correct notify Mary Lou Schmidt.
MEMBERSHIP OCTOBER 1,2003-SEPTEMBER 30, 2004
Mary Lou is soliciting membership for this fiscal year. Thanks to all who send in their dues. Lets keep up the good work and support the NHS Alumni. Five dollars is a small amount to ask. Lifetime membership is $150.00. You may want to consider this. DonŐt "forgetÓ the Endowment and Scholarship funds. Last year we had over 1053 members. This is the largest membership we ever had.
NIGHT AT THE RACES
On February 21, 2004, a fundraiser is held to provide the After Prom event. This fun evening is being held at the Southgate V.F.W. For information phone 442-9897.
LYLE HAGGARD TEACHER
Wanda Reis reported Lyle Haggard passed away Tuesday November 25, 2003. Lyle taught at Newport High School from 1949 to 1963. He served in the Army from 1937 to 1941, and then in WWII from 1942 to 1945. He traveled extensively, including trips to Thailand, sailed small boats on the Nile, walked the Great Wall of China, toured Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Russia. His first wife Louise Haggard died in 1981 and he was now married to Mildred Murphy Haggard. Survivors are two daughters Lyla Haggard and Denise Caswell; brothers Kenneth and Clinton; sisters Wanda Stanton and Dorothy Haggard; and four grandchildren.
OLIVER FREEZE (OLLIE ROBINSON)
As we reported in our last issue Ollie passed away August 6, 2003. He is survived by three daughters, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He retired as a math teacher after 35 years of service in the Cincinnati School system. After Graduating from Newport High School he attended the University of Cincinnati playing football as Ollie Freeze. Recently his family requested permission to spread his ashes over the football field of Newport High to conform to his wishes. This was his desire and the family spread his remains over the entire field. To the present and future players, remember Ollie is looking over you.
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO REUNION COMMITTEES
In the past too few of the ŇyoungerÓ graduates have attended these functions. Inquire about the Alumni and see if we can make your reunion more enjoyable. This is your organization. Lets enjoy it.
Please consider the All Class Reunion and Dance to celebrate your reunion. No problem, send in your reservations, get your group together, good food, nice music and all planning is arranged. If you care to join the committee you are welcome.
Please advise me of your Reunion plans so I can list them in the newsletter for your classmates to see.
Sincerely,
Bob Hesch

YOUR CLASS REPS NEED TO REPORT
To provide the information our readers want to know, our Class Reps need to provide the information to the editor. Many people inquire why they have no news from your class. The only answer I can give, "If you give me news, I will try to include it in the Newsletter." Most grads not only want to be informed of deceased classmates, but also would like to hear from classmates including information of people they do not see often. Shut-ins would appreciate hearing of your health problems, travel, or other items of interest. Send a card or phone call while they are recuperating. If you have any information you would like to share with your class or friends, contact me direct at Bob Hesch, 21 Audubon Place, Ft. Thomas, KY 41075 or phone 859-441-0695. My E- mail address is RLHESCH@FUSE.NET.
