I was living in Pennsylvania at this time but my parents called to tell me they could see the flames from our house up on Kentucky Drive.

Printed Book of Newport history
The following is not a URL but a report on an available reference book. {Provided by David Collins 1963}
My brother Ron (NHS '55) recently gave me a book of photos for my 60th. (ugh!) birthday. The book is titled "Images of America - Newport". It seems that any city, county, state or region can commission Arcadia Publishing to do a photographic essay with varying parameters, aided by local citizens providing the pictures and captions for the same. This particular book is divided into eight chapters, varying from old businesses to landmarks to "Sin City". It's a paperback, 128 pages, all black and white photos (perhaps with a hint of sepia tone), text by Judy L. Neff and Peggy Wiedemann Harris and carries a price tag of $19.95. Mine came from Barnes and Noble Booksellers, Florence Square Shopping Center, 7663 Mall Road, Florence, Kentucky, 41042, Phone 859.647.6400.
Although I no longer live there, I still have a soft spot in my heart for Newport and Campbell County. I have more than a passing interest in it's history. I found the book most enjoyable, especially since my father, Kenneth Collins Sr., appears on pages 60 and 110 and my brother, Kenneth Jr. also on page 60. If anyone has a nostalgic interest in Newport, the book is highly recommended. My God, did I just give a written book report? I don't know if Mr. John Collins or Miss Ella Stone Spencer would have liked it. I'm sure it was very lacking.
