Goetta, a Breakfast meal
Goetta is (I think) a German dish that combines pork, oats, onions and seasoning into a material that is sliced into slabs and fried. I have only had it for breakfast but perhaps it is used for other meals.
There is a (at least one) company in the Cincinnati area that sells Goetta. . I have never tasted their product. I only have eaten the Goetta made by my mother and which I now make for myself.
I lived / live in the Philadelphia, PA area for almost 20 years. The Pennsylvania Dutch sell a product called Scrapple that has some of the characteristics of Goetta. Scrapple is NOT Goetta, don't buy it thinking you have a substitute for Goetta. Buy Scrapple if you want a fat fix.

I would like to add something to
making Goetta. Of course, when I was a kid, i was sent to Dorsel Flour Co. at
the underpass on Monmouth Street to buy the Pinhead Oats to make Goetta. Dorsel
Flour Co. has now moved to Indiana.
You can buy Dorsel's pinhead oats in
most Kroger Stores, Remke's and any of the German Markets in the area after the
first week in October. You must keep the oats in the freezer to keep weevils
from hatching . The recipe is on the bag. They use a combination of 1# pork and
1# beef. Thats the way my mom made it.
If you get desperate, Dorsel will ship
the oats UPS anywhere for $2.00 per 2# bag. You have to buy 4 bags to absorb
the shipping charges.

Could we persuade Glenn to share his "almost" Dixie Chili Recipe with the rest of us who now live in other parts of the country and also crave "Greek" chili? I have craved it to the extent that I have paid the $15.95 case price plus $9.81 to have it shipped to me here in California. That equals out to $2.15 for each of those small cans. But it was worth every penny of it.
Also I wonder how many are aware that our favorite chili has a web site at:
Reading all the memories of chili has made me wonder how many also have memories of Goetta and get cravings for a breakfast of Goetta, eggs and rye toast. (Remember Rubel's Rye Bread?) For those who share my cravings for Goetta, it too has a website, where it can be ordered right from Glier's in Covington.

Have enjoyed all the messages filled with news and memories that have been sent to you. Hope they continue to arrive -- nothing better than sharing memories of home. Newport and Southgate have always been and always will be home.
Thanks once again, Jerry for compiling and maintaining the email directory. It was a great idea!

Recipe for Goetta
1.5 Lbs. Pork Boneless Ribs or equivalent to get 2 cups of cooked Pork
1 Cup of Pinhead Oatmeal (Steel Cut Oatmeal is what I use & is available in most Health Food Stores)
1 Cup of Onion (Cut Fine)
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
Cook pork in water until tender.
Cut cooked pork into small pieces. Measure and get about 2 cups of cooked pork pieces.
Return pork pieces to liquid. Add oatmeal and chopped onion. Salt and pepper to taste.
Cook carefully until oatmeal, etc. are well cooked and liquid is used up. (Liquid may have to be added to assure oatmeal is cooked.)
Let cool, then put into loaf pan. When firm, slice into 3/8 "slabs. (Freeze individual slabs that aren't used immediately).
Put slab in skillet and brown / serve

Hi Gang,
My friend in Melbourne, Fl sent me the URL below, I think the article will
interest all of you. My father worked for Bob Glier, the founder of Glier's
Meats back in the early 50's. In fact, Louise Glier sang at our wedding.
Len, maybe this will give you an overview of Goetta and what you have missed
all your life. LOL Jerry, you might want to put this URL out for the Alumni
directory. I am sure there are other Goetta lovers in the Alumni.
More later when I return from Winchester Bay. Bye for now...Ione
