A White Corporal Emerges

Here is a White Corporal that is just coming out of its larval shell to begin the aerial phase of life! Photographed in Amherst, NH.

The "hanging back" phase (brief rest period after the dragonfly has emerged)
Note shriveled wing "buds".
Wings inflate as haemolymph (body fluid) circulates.
Veins in wings are now apparent.
The larval skin will be left behind.
Brief maiden flight complete. Haemolymph withdraws; wing veins now hollow tubes
