Ever since Frank
Stella asked his students the famous question
“…what is painting?”a great variety
of new positions in painting have emerged. One of the most
subtle standpoints is advocated by the young Belgian
artist, working in Berlin,
Julien Rouvroy. Through
strategies of seduction Rouvroy manages to gently guide the
spectator into a seemingly innocent world of
children’s games and discoveries, until he realises
how subverted the pictorial motifs are. In his current
series, exemplarily titled “Wunderkind”, girls
and boys that are engrossed in their playing and their
togetherness are common themes...
