The Depot, 7:30 a.m., January 23

Volunteers met at The Depot early on a frigid morning to set up Eyes Wide Open. It took 4.5 hours to set out 1,374 pairs of boots, one pair for each U.S. service person killed in Iraq to date.

The Depot's space was just enough to mount the exhibition. Unloading the truck from the American Friends Service Committee, tour organizer. Marq Anderson, AFSC tour manager, instructs the volunteers. John Young, Patti Hughes, Ann Lennon and The Depot building manager. Boots are boxed by the home states of the dead. Most exhibitions have been outdoors or in larger spaces. Precise placement was essential to getting all the boots in the space.
