Richmond 2001

The 2001 holiday took us to Richmond in North Yorkshire. Once again we were not having a full week but four days (Wed-Sat). The weather was largely fine with the notable exception of the Saturday round when we played in torrential rain!
Another good turnout saw pretty much the full squad of; Keith, Fritz, Tony, Gavin, Andy, Alan, Davie, Dave, Steve, Stef and Mark. Keith was there in a advisory capacity only (for the second time missing out due to a broken arm!). Keith's bad luck didn't stop with his injury he also ended up getting both Gavin and Tony in the dreaded 'Room Draw'!

We were only playing two courses this year, Richmond and Catterick and it was to the latter that we set off on Wednesday afternoon. The course was quite open and fairly long so it was a good oportunity for everyony to iron out those little flaws in their game! We divided into three threeballs and got round in good time. Our sumptuous accommodation this year was in the Bishops Blaise Hotel. It was down market from last year to say the least! The best thing that could be said for it was its central location. Thursdays games were at Richmond GC which is slightly hillier and shorter than Catterick and amazingly everyone managed two full rounds!

Friday saw us back at Richmond playing for the famous 'Room Trophy'. Once again this was an extremely hard fought competition with only three points separating all of the teams. For the third year running Gavin scooped the weeks major prize. This time partenered by Bones. That evening in the pub the inaugural presentation of the trophies for this competition was made. It was thought appropriate (given the nature of the holiday) that the trophies should be pewter beer tankards!

On Saturday we went back to Catterick. Unfortunately, Stef had had some bad news and he and Andy had returned home. However our numbers were increased back up to eight with the arrival of Ket from Newcastle. Ket was in a fourball with Davie, Gavin and Steve and proceded to take three quid off each of them in side bets during the round (don't know if he will be invited again!). The highlight for me was when five of us were huddling under Davies umbrella in an absolutely torrential downpour and we were overtaken by the following group (Alan, Mark, Fritz and Tony) trudging past soaked to the skin, no waterproofs no umbrellas nothing - priceless! The 'still standing' trophy was won by Mark for the second year running - although it was a close run thing with some pretty pathetic scores being handed in!

And then it was Sunday and time to go home. I think everyone enjoyed themselves - even me (just watching and drinking) - and the venue was much more accessable than last year. Several proposals were made for the 2002 venue. I think that the most likely outcome will be a trip to Dumfries in south west Scotland
