Portpatrick 2000
The Millennium holiday took us back to our roots, Portpatrick in the south west of Scotland. This area was the scene of the first ever golf holiday back in '87. However, this year for the first time, we were not having a full week but only three days (what does that tell you about us!). As usual we were fortunate with the weather with bright sunshine each day. I'm not sure whether it's a case of the sun shining on the righteous - or Davie performing a human sacrifice each year! Another good turnout saw 10 of us (missing Andy and Gavin) turn up at the Fernhill Hotel on Thursday lunchtime. The 'Room Draw' lost some of it's usual potency by the absence of the man nobody wants - Gavin! We promptly set off for Dunskey Golf Club which was all of 200 yards away! This was an excellent choice for the first round, being a relatively short, open links course. The first competition was won by a newcomer to the trip - Dave Keen. His handicap was promptly savaged! The old hands looked on smiling, saving their form for bigger prizes later in the week! The golf was up to its usual standard and as ever the warm weather had made us very thirsty! This year on the shortened holiday we had opted for full board - a sumptuous four course banquet (or five if you are Stef and have two puddings!). Some of us then when downtown to the local pub for a few pints whilst other relaxed after their meal, with liqueurs on the terrace (shower of big poofs!). Gavin appeared, with perfect timing, on the tee the next morning. This was the only time the description "perfect timing" could be applied to Gavin's golf! An individual competition in the morning (for The Rhos-on-Sea Plate) was won by Steve, who also won the nearest the hole competition. The Room competition was won by Fritz, Stef and Gavin - but as neither Fritz or Stef would sleep with Gavin - no prize was awarded! The glory is enough boys! A bigger turnout hit the pub that night - but still not a full compliment - you're getting old guys! On Saturday we travelled to Stranraer to play. The morning competition (for The Rhos-on-Sea Mug!) was won by bloody Steve again! The afternoon round was shortened to nine holes (as we were all absolutely knackered). The prize in the afternoon was the accursed "Still Standing Trophy". This is presented to the person with the worst score. Gavin won (if this is the correct term) with a stableford score of 5 points - which off a handicap of 24 is pretty pathetic! A bottle of vodka went to Davie for having a score of 20. And then it was Sunday and time to go home. I think that everyone thought Portpatrick was a great place - but it is a bugger to get to. The Liverpool guys had a 5 hour drive and Alan even more. Next year I will suggest some slightly more accessible places! We all thought that the holiday was too short (maybe we are not as old and knackered as we thought!). Next year the plan is to meet on Wednesday lunchtime and leave on Sunday. Thanks again to everyone who came along - I look forward to seeing you all at next year's trip - venue to be announced. Fritz took a lot of video footage this holiday so we are hoping to get small movies of each of you up on the web site. At the moment he is working on the "Gavin Collection". New movies can be seen on the Home Movies Page. These movies are very time consuming to produce so please be patient. You will get regular emails telling you when YOUR big moment has come! KD
