Gala 1993

The Border Reivers were a bunch of lawless thieves, drunks and mercenaries who terrorised the area in bygone days. Well in 1993 the Osnaburg Golf Society did their best to revive the tradition, at least as far as the drunkeness was concerned. We stayed in a hotel right in the centre of Gala and took full advantage of the residents right to keep the bar open long after closing time.

Regulars Keith, Fritz, Tony, Stef, Gavin, Andy, Dave A. and Dave F. were there for the duration with cameo appearances from two of the finest footballers ever to grace a Watt team, local lads Colin Seaton and Wattie Allan. My memory of Wattie is of a rotund(putting it politely) figure turning up in the bar wearing a HUGE pair of shorts, cursing and swearing to an extent that would have brought a blush to Davie Stewarts face, had he been there.

The golf was played on some really nice, friendly courses around the towns of the Borders, among them Gala, Selkirk and Hawick. About the only incident I can remember from the golf involved Gavin(surprise, surprise).

We turned up at a course in Gala, only to find it shut because of a local holiday. We decided to play anyway and set off to hack our way round. At the furthest away point from the clubhouse Gavin decided that he had to unburden himself. Much to Stef's astonishment and despite the kind offer of the toilet roll he keeps in his bag for emegencies, Gavin declined to use perfectly adequate facilities in adjoining woodlands. Off trotted Gavin to the clubhouse forgetting that it was closed. Fortunately he had his car keys and drove back to the hotel to do what he had to do. Meanwhile the rest of us continued with our game wondering what on earth had happened to him!

All in all, the Borders provided a good, if particularly drunken weeks golf.
