Forfar 1991
Well this year the golf holiday had everything - good accommodation, great weather, great golf courses and all night lock-ins! We travelled up to Forfar and checked in to the luxurious Royal Hotel (sauna, spa, swimming pool etc.). Dave Faran came along this year - a new, enthusiastic (but crap) addition to the golf party! The team this year consisted of: Dave (mentioned above), Keith, Fritz, Gavin, Tony, Dave Ardren, Steve, Stef and for the first couple of days Colin. Forfar has a number of excellent pubs but the one that we made our own (literally if our societies name is anything to go by) was the Osnaburg Tavern. Good beer, late bar, late-night pizza - wonderful. We also played some golf! Some of the most fantastic golf courses in Scotland are to be found in this area and we sampled a number of them. We played, Alyth, Arbroath, Edsel, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Montrose and (for those with more money than sense) Carnoustie. For a classic links course Montrose takes some beating, but its on-course toilet facilities were not up to Stef's demanding standards! Still a stand of trees and a bunch of docken leaves came to the rescue of our intrepid golfer! All of the courses we played were excellent. In the tradition of the debut golfer winning, Dave Faran partnered with Dave Ardren won the room competition. The Carnoustie experience was sampled by only four of us. Gavin, Steve, Fritz and Keith forked out a large amount of money to lose all their balls on this championship course. Unfortunately there was a pro-am competition on that day, which they had slotted us in the middle of. This meant that about fifty or so good golfers were standing around the first tee to watch us drive off. The sound of knocking knees could be heard several hundred yards away! Amazingly, all four tee shots were stuck well (by our standards!) and it was with a mixture of pride, relief and surprise that we strode off down the fairway together. This was to be the only fairway this happened! The star performer was Fritz who played out of his skin. If it wasn't for a lost ball in the middle of the fairway at one of the final holes he would have broken a hundred - a magnificent effort (remember Tiger Woods and Colin Montgomerie went round here in the high 80's!). All in all a terrific week.
