Viewing the film adaptation
- You should view the film adaptation at least
three times, probably more.
- Before beginning to view the video, make sure that
you have clearly identified a focus from the novel.
Remember that, in your final essay, you must clearly
establish the presence and function of either a theme
or a binary opposition in the novel before considering
how it has been altered in the video.
-
First Viewing: When watching the video, create a
chart by dividing a sheet of paper in half. On one
side, record visual images and soundscapes that draw
your attention. On the other side, record names,
important dialogue, plot, etc. Note down the
approximate time so that you can find the
scenes easily again.
A minimum expectation for this chart is 25
significant entries. Detailed attention at this stage
will save time later when you need time markers for
your film citations in the essay.
Example of correctly formatted citation in the
essay.
e.g.
Scorsese emphasizes the character's ferocity through
an extended closeup on his face during the beating of
the victim (Goodfellas 1:39:20).

Based on the information you read in "From Page to Screen,"
prepare a chart like the one below. Although this
chart shows only two observations for each type of
change, do not feel restricted to this number. You
should include all significant differences on this
chart, even if they do not immediately seem to be
related to your original focus from the novel.

- Subsequent Viewings: Now that you have focused your
thinking, watch the video again to fill in any gaps.
Now is the time to make sure you have sufficient time
references noted. As you continue in the writing
process, you will want to return to the film to verify
and expand your descriptions of shots and scenes;
having useful time references will save much time and
aggravation!
