Sequence

  1. Class Brainstorm: What is a hero?
  2. Chartpaper Activity: compare "Everyday heroes" and "Superheroes." Derive list of characteristics common to both.
  3. Handout: What is a Hero?
  4. Heroic Quest 7 stages handout
  5. Students self-select into groups of three.
  6. Suggest use of Miss Congeniality Credits to help clarify character names while watching.
  7. Watch opening sequence of Miss Congeniality: discuss ways that the filmmaker indicates who the hero will be (media codes.)Title Sequence Handout
  8. Watch remainder of film (2 classes), filling in notes Teacher Resource: Sequence with time markers
  9. In group, students fill in Chapter Titles worksheet 1 and worksheet 2
  10. In group, students define 7 stages of Miss Congeniality's heroic quest.
  11. Students choose scenes for novelization.
  12. Individual writing, reviewing of selected scenes, group editing (2 classes)
  13. Class discussion: the female hero in movies, television, comic books, and videogames.
