Tribeca Area History

Tribeca is a small older neighborhood located in Manhattan. It's boundaries are Canal Street at the top, which used to be a navigable waterway for merchants to save time by avoiding the added time it would take to travel all the way around the base of the island at Battery Park as you can clearly see on the above map. Canal Street is the top semi-horizontal line.

The name Tribeca is short for the "Triangle Below Canal Street".

Tribeca is located below SoHo. SoHo starts its base at Canal Street and runs uptown all the way to Houston Street, pronounced "House-Ton" Street, not as Houston, Texas. SoHo is a trendy shopping area with top retailers and many "loss-leaders" who want the exposure in to the demographics of the area.

Note the various links below, the first of which is for the preeminent Hotel in Tribeca known as the "Tribeca Grand Hotel" at www.TribecaGrand.com which is a medium sized beautifully designed and trendy night spot with the perfect location to walk out the hotel directly onto virtually any subway running throughout the city. The second link will jump you to my home page to email me, etc. The last link is to my Manhattan Blog which notes various additional links at the right side to many of the same links at the very top of this page as well as events in the City.
