What's New?
| 4 June 2005 | Version 1.4 didn't last long. Special thanks go to Arnór Kristjánsson for finding a bug that is now fixed in 1.5.
Also, it seems that Apple has a pretty bad network outage yesterday. Naturally that would happen on the day I drop a new version of this widget. Sorry.

| 3 June 2005 | Version 1.4 is ready. One new feature, see below...
|
|
| 23 May 2005 | What can I say? I am amazed. Over 800 downloads in 24 hours. I listed the widget on a few sites and it really got some hits today. If you are interested, you can also see this widget at...
VersionTracker.com I also submitted to Apple but they didn't post any new widgets today. We'll see tomorrow. UPDATE: It seems I may have spoken too soon! Apple posted their updates pretty late today, but IP Subnet Calculator is now also posted on Apple.com.

| 22 May 2005 | Well 1.2 never saw the light of day, but I created new graphics for 1.3 and this is going to be the first public release version. | |
| 19 May 2005 | And away we go. I took a little more time to work on the widget before I released it. It now has a back and a link to this website. Tommy also made the new graphics. It also slimmed down just a bit. I am calling it version 1.1. Still have not submitted to VersionTracker. | |
| 13 May 2005 | Here is the initial webpage and release of my subnet calculator widget. I am going to submit it to Apple and VersionTracker tomorrow. |

F.A.Q.
| Q: | What is this? | |
| A: | IP Subnet Calculator is a basic Dashboard Widget that helps network geeks make IP subnet calculations. If you need this sort of thing, it's purpose is clear to you already. | |
| Q: | How does this work? | |
| A: | There are six fields on the widget. Start by entering any valid host or network address in the IP address field. Next, enter the mask.
You can enter either the number of bits in the mask using the Mask Bits field or you can enter the mask in dotted-decimal notation using the Subnet Mask field. Once you have enough information entered to make a valid calculation, the rest of the fields will appear. |
|
| Q: | I did that and it doesn't work. What's wrong? | |
| A: | My guess is that you entered the subnet mask or IP address incorrectly. Valid IP addresses are from 1.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.254. Valid Masks are from 8 to 31 bits or from 255.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.254. | |
| Q: | What is the new Wildcard Mask feature? | |
| A: | The widget will now display either the Subnet Mask or the Wildcard Mask. Just click on the text above the field to change the view.
Okay, so what is the wildcard mask? Well, Cisco defines it here. I don't think that is too helpful, so here is my short explanation. Subnet Masks are used when making routing decisions to identity the network portion of the IP address. Wildcard masks are used in Cisco access lists to identify the host portion of the IP address. Basically they are just bit-flipped version of the same concept. If that does not make sense, you need to look into a CCNA class. |
|
| Q: | Does it cost anything? | |
| A: | Nope. | |
| Q: | Does it require a connection to the Internet? | |
| A: | Nope. | |
| Q: | What if I want to get in touch with you? | |
| A: | Feel free to email me. As a matter of fact, if you like this widget, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached at williams.jeremy@mac.com. On the other hand, complaints may be summarily ignored. |
