The following obituary, from the January 22, 1910 Clinton, MA Courant, was provided by Paul Coyle, great grandson of Patrick.
Private Patrick Coyle Dead. Veteran of the Civil War, 70 years of age, passed away this morning. Ill for some time - the death of another of
the veterans of the Civil War and a member of Post 64, G.A.R., occured
at 10:30 o'clock, on Thursday, when Patrick Coyle, one of the oldest
residents of Clinton, passed away at his home on Sterling Street,
following an illness with which he was stricken on December 20; he was
troubled with paralysis and his condition has been very critical
although he rallied at times. Several years ago he suffered a shock, but
his rugged constitution overcame his illness at that time. For the past
20 years he has resided with his wife at the family home, the couple in
their advanced age living comfortably. The deceased was born in Ireland
and in 1845 came to America, stopping for a time in New York. A short
while afterwards he came to Clinton. He enlisted in Co. I, 53d Mass.
Vol. and served his entire enlistment period of 9 months. He was
mustered out at Groton, September 2, 1863. During his enlistment he
took part in the battles at Fort Bisland, LA, April 14, 1863; at Bayou
Vermilion, LA. , April 17, 1863 and in the siege at Port Hudson, May 24
to July 9, 1863. He participated in all the battles and skirmishes
against Port Hudson and was wounded in the spine during one of the
attacks on June 14, 1863. He was confined in the hospital at
Donaldsonville during the month of August but made a complete recovery.
During the time of General Banks' first Red River expedition he became
ill but quickly recovered and returned to the service. After the fall
of Port Hudson and while marching with the heavy guns of the artillery
on July 18, 1863 he was injured. After his discharge from the army he
returned to Clinton and for a number of years resided in the Four Ponds
district, remaining there until 20 years ago when the present home on
Sterling Street was purchased. He leaves 3 children: Michael of
Worcester, John of Boston, and Mrs. Jeremiah Murray of Leominster,
formerly of Clinton. His funeral will be held on Saturday morning and
services will be held in St. John's Church.
