Wind, Water, Solar, Biofuels & Future

Citizens for Clean Energy, Inc. (CCE) is an all volunteer group of Montana citizens from many backgrounds and political persuasions. Our objective is to convince decision makers that adequate, clean, efficient, and cost effective energy for our community and state can be obtained without destroying our health, lifestyle, and environment. We are united by a very deep concern about the harm coal-fired plants cause to the local environments and our world.

The City of Great Falls and Southern Montana Electric are currently choosing to become a major world polluting industry by building a now $900,000,000 (and growing) coal fired plant just east of our City on and adjacent to the Lewis & Clark portage site. This plant will produce as much Carbon Dioxide (CO2) pollution on a daily basis as 561,000 cars suddenly arriving here in Great Falls. CO2 pollution is partly responsible for global warming and is likely to be taxed heavily in the future making this plant uncompetitive with alternative energy projects.

The proposed Highwood coal plant will pollute our air, water, and land with toxic mercury, dangerous heavy metals, radionuclides, and many other deadly compounds. Very fine particulate ash will be discharged into the air, continuously, and distributed to the populace invading deep into our lungs. Exposure to small particle pollution has been linked to significant health problems, ranging from aggravated asthma to premature death in people with already impaired respiratory function, heart and lung disease.

Tell the decision makers we would rather upgrade our local hydroelectric facilities built in the early part of the last century. PP&L must update all their hydro plants on the Missouri in a timely manner. Encourage PPL and Northwestern to do studies on utilizing our Missouri River waters to create a "Water Battery System" in conjunction with the ample wind power available here. The City must open dialogs with Northwestern Electric, Pennsylvania Power & Electric, Montgomery Energy, The Governor's office, Cascade County Commissioners, and local landowners. With all the resources available here, there are many good solutions for clean power to serve our area. Write the Governor to investigate
Stored Wind Energy, Pumped Hydro Storage, New Solar Power, Biofuels, and Geothermal Power as base Generation in Montana. Our state has many areas where these resources can be utilized to great benefit in producing electricity and other uses. Lets put "Clean Power" ahead of "Coal Power" for a change.
